This short documentary moved me, and I suspect it will resonate with any founder: https://t.co/Xiz1ygHWP9
Hans Thomann, the founder of @thomann Music, the world's largest music retailer—located just 40 km from me!—has a passion for the business he absolutely can’t ignore. When I watch him working in his role as CEO and entrepreneur in this very personal film, I relate so deeply.
His drive and purpose are palpable, you can see the fire behind his eyes when he talks about his excitement for what he built from scratch in 35 years. One can also pick up hints of the darker sides of decades-long entrepreneurship. Such success does come at a cost, always.
Ever since childhood, he’s been driven to work. He wants a handshake deal to mean something and stakes his reputation on quality and customer experience. Even as he seeks to scale back in his later chapters of life, he still believes the company is “under construction” as long as it exists.
Some of that sounds crazy, and it probably is. His wife even says so. But it’s more than that—Hans sees his company as a family. “All the parts must fit,” he says. “That makes it a really big family.” He wants employees who love what they do and care about the big picture, blending hobbies with work in a way that motivates them to excel. In a sense, he hopes they share a bit of his passion.
As I watched Hans talk about his extended family in the documentary, I had tears in my eyes. My passion may not be guitars and drumsets, yet I deeply relate to his sense of purpose.
We both started our work life in our early teenage years, we both had this lucky situation that we got our interest hooked on something so early. We found what drove us and went all-in. By the time most people finish their education and start their careers, we both had already collected 10 years of experience and were running companies of our own.
From there onwards, Hans Thomann poured all he had into Musikhaus Thomann. While I had to get out of the CEO/founder role eventually at age 50, he continued and is still involved in daily business. There are two main points of reflection there:
• I envy him a bit for being able to adapt and to stay CEO during all these growth years (after 20 years of growth at Paessler I had to quit in 2017. There were too many people around me and I was not able to add value to the company any more; I couldn’t adapt any more after 20 years of continuous adaptation.).
• I do not envy him for not having yet found an “exit” out of the “daily business cycle” (having found this exit was one of the most important steps in my life, while it is not easy—as for most other founders this exit was a personal challenge on several layers for me).
People with a drive like Hans Thomann are changing the world to a better place, and we need as many of them as we can get!
Most founders probably agree, it’s not a life you choose—it grabs you and you hold on. There’s something beautiful in the passion, even if it makes you a little crazy.
Now THAT’S a lot of guitars.😳
