One of the main reasons the undeniably revolutionary technology of artificial intelligence has become so polarized in its reception is because it was “rolled out“ with all of the subtleties of a warthog fart.
Now there is a Venn diagram of people around the globe who are absolutely and staunchly against it, those who believe that it is truly the savior of human existence, and then somewhere in the middle, you have people like me who have accepted the fact that AI is here to stay, it’s not going anywhere, but it should have been released with a great deal, more caution, diplomacy, and common sense.
But wouldn’t you know it, surprise, surprise, software companies, saw DOLLAR signs and many of them said “fuck everything… It’s time to make a quick buck!”
You can almost picture the scenario in your head with absolute clarity… Some bored, narcissistic, nihilistic software executive sitting in a meeting, listening to some nerdy tech head going over their latest advancements and all at once the executive stops him mid sentence, grabs the geek by his ranch dressing-stained pocket protector and says, “Wait a minute… Are you telling me that we have software that can basically go through the Internet and train itself to draw and animate every image that’s ever been created?”
The tech nerd, of course, replies “Well, Theoretically… But we wouldn’t be able to do anything with it, because we would potentially be violating an infinite number of copyrights and trademarks… We would be opening a legal Pandora’s box… Not to mention the fact that to profit from it would be highly unethical.”
The executive would then laugh maniacally and bellow in his face, “Didn’t you just say an ‘infinite number?’ How is anyone going to prosecute an infinite number of anything? Now get your sorry, Naruto-loving ass back to your workstation, and train this software on everything in existence until it can give me a hyper anime-style, fully three-dimensional image of Velma from ‘Scooby Doo’ but with gigantic knockers! And make ‘em jiggle! We’re gonna grift the living shit out of these incels and bleed those frustrated basement-dwellers dry of every last penny of their parents’ 401k!”
And that is precisely what happened. Down to the last detail.
The next thing you know, the Internet is all a-buzz over this transformative new technology that promises to make all of your dreams (not to mention sick fantasies) a reality.
Well… virtually speaking.
Enamored by the site of Velma with gigantic knockers, they used this as a gateway tool and said, “Hey! It doesn’t just give you Velma with big knockers, it can also do all of your thinking for you from now on!”
And that was that.
The world had been sold, and everyone eagerly accepted that we were staring into the dawn of a new age with unlimited bouncing knockers and the freedom of never having to think for ourselves ever again.
The executives became billionaires overnight, and the tech heads were turned into demi-gods.
Public relations firms and legal departments didn’t waste a minute getting on top of it all with arguments like, “Well, what IS a ‘copyright’ anyway?“ and “Artificial intelligence learns the same way humans do… So, y’know… it’s all good!“
But now that we are a couple of years into this deluge of televangelist-style hooting and hollering, the bloom is off the rose, the knockers have stopped jiggling and people are starting to push back on the narrative that this is the greatest thing to ever happen in the whole wide world.
Once you know how it all works and that it’s the sum total of plagiarism, fraud, and theft on a global scale, watching Will Smith shovel spaghetti into his mouth starts to lose its “magic” no matter how flawlessly realistic it may be.
