Earlier this month, Donegal County Council submitted its official response to a cross-border consultation on the proposed Dalradian goldmine in the Sperrins — and their message is loud and clear: this mine could spell serious trouble for Donegal’s rivers, wildlife, and future.
Here’s what you need to know 👇
🌊 Water at Risk
The mine could pollute the River Finn — a protected river that flows into Donegal. Experts fear the toxic waste from mining (including heavy metals like mercury and arsenic) could flow downstream, harming fish, wildlife, and drinking water.
🐟 Atlantic Salmon in Danger
The River Finn is a vital breeding ground for wild Atlantic salmon. The Loughs Agency warns the mine could cause “lasting damage” to this species — with effects stretching all the way to Lough Foyle and the sea.
🧪 Bad Science, Incomplete Assessments
Donegal Council, environmental agencies, and experts all agree: the environmental reports from Dalradian are outdated, overly complex, and fail to properly assess the cross-border impacts — particularly in Donegal.
💥 What if Something Goes Wrong?
Dalradian wants to store waste rock in a huge ‘dry stack’ near the mine. But experts say this tailings pile could collapse during heavy rain or flooding — spilling toxic waste into the River Foyle and across the border.
📜 Legal Gaps & Public Concerns
The public wasn’t properly consulted. Key risks to Ireland’s water and wildlife weren’t assessed. Even the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the project could breach EU environmental laws.
⚖️ What’s Next?
Donegal County Council is urging the Northern authorities to apply the precautionary principle — in other words, if you’re not 100% sure it’s safe, don’t approve it
