Todd himself was among the first British soldiers to land in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord in June 1944.

It’s an incredible saga of Polish courage and determination.
Poland’s storied GEN #Maczek 1st Armored Division plays a crucial role in the #NormandyCampaign in the #Falaise crucible to which GEN #DwightEisenhower says: “only Dante could describe Falaise’ aftermath.”
Few are aware that despite two brutal invasions and occupations - Germany and SovietRussia - Poland provides the allies its fourth largest army. Poles will fight fiercely on all fronts, on Land/Sea/Air in SpecialOperations #SOF and in the Underground #HomeArmy #AK at Home.
Poland’s AK is the largest, most sophisticated and effective underground in occupied-Europe. Poles make decisive contributions in breaking the German #EnigmaCode - shortening the War, saving millions of lives. Poland delivers vital V2 rocket intelligence to the Allies. And, Poland establishes Żegota to save Jews (despite Poland being the only occupied state, where Germany levies the death penalty, for even the smallest of aid to a Jew).

Their combat trail ended in Germany, but for many of Gen. Maczek’s soldiers, the road home remained closed.
81 years ago, Gen. Stanisław Maczek’s Polish 1st Armoured Division completed its combat trail in Wilhelmshaven.
While Gen. Anders’ 2nd Polish Corps was fighting in Italy, Maczek’s soldiers followed another route: through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and finally Germany.
Fighting under the operational command of the 1st Canadian Army, they helped close the Falaise Pocket in Normandy and liberated towns and cities across Western Europe. In France, Belgium and the Netherlands, Polish soldiers were often welcomed with enthusiasm. On German soil, they found empty streets and fear.
In early May 1945, the division reached Wilhelmshaven, a heavily fortified German naval base. On 5 May, Polish soldiers entered the city. By order of Gen. Maczek, Col. Antoni Grudziński accepted the surrender of German forces in the area.
The capture of Wilhelmshaven marked the end of the division’s combat trail. According to command estimates, 37 Polish officers and 567 non-commissioned officers and privates were killed during its campaign.
After victory in Europe, Maczek’s division served as an occupation force in the British zone of Germany. Many of its soldiers never returned to Poland, remaining in exile.

🚧 | Worksite – Bayeux Memorial | 🌺
We are currently carrying out work on our historic and iconic Second World War memorial in Normandy.
The memorial stands opposite our Bayeux War Cemetery and bears the names of over 1,700 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died in the early stages of the campaign and have no known grave. They died during the landings in Normandy, during the intense fighting in the region, and during the advance to the River Seine in August.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of July 2026. Please visit our website for more information.

Join me tomorrow, Saturday, June 28th at 2pm for my follow-up lecture on D-Day!
I will share 10 key facts you probably didn’t know about the Normandy Campaign.

A friend shared a photo of this plaque in Arromanches, Normandy-France honoring Poland’s heroic 1st Armored Division (AD). The plaque marks the 🇵🇱1st AD’s arrival to France during the #NormandyCampaign, and the beginning of its vital contributions to allied victory.
🇵🇱’s 1st AD is charismatically commanded by #StanisławMaczek, renowned for saying, “Polish soldiers fight for freedom for all nations but they die only for Poland.” Gen Maczek’s #BlackDevils (as they are dubbed by the Germans), lead victories in France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, not losing a single battle.
The 🇵🇱 1st AD closes the Falaise Pocket, causing the destruction of multiple German divisions near the end of the Normandy Campaign. 🇵🇱’s Black Devils go on to liberate multiple towns and cities including Breda, Netherlands, and the POW camp in Oberlangen.
Overshadowed by the end of the WWII on May 8 1945, few are aware that two days earlier, it’s Gen Maczek and his battle hardened Polish 1st AD soldiers who crucially seize the main German naval base at Wilhelmshaven, capturing 200 ships, 32,000 German soldiers and 1,900 officers.

I've just heard the next print run will be out around Valentine's Day.
Nothing says 'I love you' like the gift of the English translation of General Maczek's memoirs.
