Doing nothing about inaccessibility for disabled people is not a neutral stance.
It is hostile, exclusionary, segregationist, devaluing and dehumanizing.
Just a reminder that if you tell a disabled person to move out of the US if they’re scared of living here, other countries don’t want us either. Countries will turn you away because you’re disabled. We’re seen as a burden and that’s so normalized that it’s okay to turn us away.
Ableism is when someone says I'm inspirational for leaving my house while simultaneously being part of the reason I can't leave my house.
I’m tired of disabled people being seen as disposable and I’m tired of us begging for our lives.
“Wow, I can’t imagine staying at home for so long.”
Then why do you think it’s okay for disabled people to stay home? Many of us have been isolating for going on five years now. Our mental health is not good and it’s hardly ever acknowledged. We deserve to exist in society!
Disabled people’s lack of accessibility is not meant to inspire you when you see us struggle to navigate public spaces, it’s meant to anger you. Ableism is seeing our struggle as a beautiful triumph rather than an egregious failure of the system.
One of the biggest letdowns from this pandemic was how I expected the accommodations that were created, to stay. The online school and work, Telehealth doctors, streaming new movies; I naively thought these would be a sign to move forward with accessibility. Ableism won again.
I wish for a society where the onus is not continually on disabled persons to "conform" & "adapt" & "sacrifice" & "push through" & "try harder."
I love how most don’t realize how ableist they are. In the beginning, most tried so hard to make things inclusive like online school, streaming concerts. Once you heard you didn’t need to continue, you dropped everything in a second. You left us behind without a thought.
as someone who rarely had a voice &/or whose voice was often silenced, having a social media account where I can speak freely has been life-changing for me
#FlyingWhileDisabled
Two flights and three incidents of wheelchair damage highlight how tough air travel is for flyers with disabilities. https://t.co/EkyAKo8a9i
Too often ‘support’ means I’ll help ‘fix’ you.
