#NotesFromTheStation: We're collaborating w/a Stanford researcher on a genetic study of flicker hybridization, so we collect a sample from every flicker before release. This one doesn't appear to be a hybrid, but sometimes birds have small genetic traces of hybridization.

#NotesFromTheStation: Look closely at this Hermit Thrush we banded last fall. Some of its claws are pale rather than the usual dark. All individuals have some genetic abnormalities, most of which—like this one—have no impact on health; this one just happens to be visible.
#NotesFromTheStation: Most Golden-crowned Sparrows we see in the winter have understated golden-brown/dark brown crowns. This bird's striking black & gold regalia is a clue that they are an older bird even if we didn't have our capture history to tell us that they're 3 years old.
#NotesFromTheStation: This young Bewick's Wren bill is not quite right; the lower mandible is too short and the upper mandible is too long and decurved. We have caught him about once a month since May, so clearly he has figured out how to use it well enough to survive!
#NotesFromTheStation: In the first 2 weeks of 2023, we only managed to band for 1 half-morning due to flooding. We processed just 5 birds, including this Yellow-rumped Warbler. We're especially excited to see them this year because we recently secured a research grant about them!
#NotesFromTheStation: Bushtits love to talk when we band them: they chatter to their flockmates & scold us enthusiastically. This female we recaptured last fall had a lot to say!

#NotesFromTheStation: American Goldfinches used to be among our most common captures, but they've declined precipitously; we captured 0 in 2018-2021. The Breeding Bird Survey has found that their populations are decreasing, but not nearly as quickly as the local drop we've seen.
#NotesFromTheStation: Swamp Sparrows live in the eastern half of North America, except for a little strip of wintering habitat along the west coast. This individual is only the seventh of their species that we have banded, and the first we have seen since 2016. @FeatheredKatie
#NotesFromTheStation: Northern Flickers come in two flavors: yellow-shafted in the east and red-shafted in the west. This bird we banded is a hybrid between the two forms, with its red mustache, red on the nape, and orange tail feathers. (1/2)
#NotesFromTheStation: In recent years, we have tried to band Northern Saw-whet Owls at night during fall migration. Although we were not visited by any owls this fall, around sunset we caught a few diurnal birds just about to settle in for the night, like this Fox Sparrow.
This bird we recently banded is more reddish than the typical Song Sparrows we get; he is probably a different subspecies, having hatched elsewhere and migrated to Coyote Creek Field Station. @FeatheredKatie

We only get a few White-throated Sparrows (left) a year, but in size and overall impression, they resemble young White-crowned Sparrows (right), so it can take a second to notice your good fortune. @FeatheredKatie

#NotesFromTheStation: The outermost tail feather here, R5, has a patch of white with a black spike pointing down through it. That black spike indicates that this not-very-pink Anna's Hummingbird is a young male rather than a female. @FeatheredKatie
#NotesFromTheStation: We put birds in light cloth bags to transport them the short distance between the nets & where we take their data. Bushtits often call to their flockmates from inside the bag, so if you catch a flock of Bushtits, you'll have many bags cheeping to each other!
#NotesFromTheStation: This Orange-crowned Warbler has spent every winter since 2016 at Coyote Creek Field Station (CCFS). He has a choice—he migrates away every spring—but he keeps coming back! @FeatheredKatie
#NotesFromTheStation: Hummingbirds are SMALL. This Anna's Hummingbird has more pink in the gorget than we generally expect to see in a female; we can tell she is female by the pattern of white and black on her outer tail feather. @FeatheredKatie
#NotesFromTheStation: Western Flycatchers (likely Pacific-slope) are the defining species of our fall migration, showing up in great numbers just for this brief period. Their big eyes, long "whiskers" (rictal bristles), and flat bills give them lots of charisma. @FeatheredKatie
Hermit Thrushes' juvenile plumage, with cute buffy teardrops on their shoulders, doesn't last long -- the birds quickly molt into plainer brown dress -- so it's fun to see while it lasts!
