#FossilFriday 🇨🇱 Picturesque skull of the ~15 million-year-old #toxodont #notoungulate Palyeidodon obtusum from southern #Chile. It is the geologically oldest member of its family with ever-growing #molars. 🦷(No scale, but it is a cow-sized skull.) Collections of @MNHNcl

#FossilFriday 🇦🇷💀Partial skull of the tiny (~1 lb./ 500 g) #notoungulate Tremacyllus from the #Pliocene of northwest #Argentina. You would be forgiven if you thought it was from a 🐿️ or 🐇 at first glance!

#FossilFriday 🇨🇴Photogenic #skull of the ~13 million-year-old #notoungulate Huilatherium pluriplicatum from La Venta, #Colombia. It was the last surviving member of its family (Leontiniidae) and one of the few #Miocene notoungulates with low-crowned #teeth. 🦷🦷🦷@ucmpberkeley

#FossilFriday 🦷🐴Holotype upper teeth of ~25 million-year-old Argyrohippus ("silver horse") praecox from #Argentina.🇦🇷Of course, it isn't REALLY a #horse. It's a #notoungulate. Specifically, it's a notohippid. For more info, check out my notohippid blog: https://t.co/vMcR8yEy2L

#FossilFriday 🇧🇴Articulated hand (cast) of the dog-sized middle #Miocene #notoungulate Hemihegetotherium trilobus - one of many beautiful specimens from Quebrada Honda, #Bolivia. For the latest on QH geology, check out our just-published PPP article:

#FossilFriday Holotype skull of the #Pleistocene #notoungulate Typotherium angustirostrum from @MacnVp - one of several mesothere species now grouped under Mesotherium cristatum. Check out this recent paper for historical & taxonomic details: https://t.co/dNachGH0gI

#FossilFriday 🇧🇴Beautiful upper teeth of Archaeohyrax suniensis from #Bolivia. Despite its scientific name, it is not a #hyrax (nor even similar to one); it is a 25 m.y.o. #notoungulate. You can see how its tall teeth became simpler as they wore down (from left to right).

#FossilFriday 🇦🇷A marvelous #Miocene mesothere skull: the holotype of Typotheriopsis chasicoensis, a sheep-sized #notoungulate that was very common ~ 10 million years ago in what today is Buenos Aires province, #Argentina. The missing bone shows its rodent-like upper incisors.

For more about #notoungulate endocasts (brains), check this article of ours that was just published online in the Journal of Mammalian Evolution:

#FossilFriday "Road kill" skeleton of the 25 million-year-old, tapir-sized #notoungulate Scarrittia from southern #Argentina 🇦🇷 Too bad all fossils aren't this complete - though flattened isn't ideal.

#FossilFriday 🇦🇷 Here are some smiling #notoungulate #teeth to wish you Happy Friday! (I added eyeballs to one to help you visualize it.) This "face" pattern of fossettes is characteristic of many early notoungulates. These 🦷🦷🦷 are about 45 million years old (middle #Eocene).

#FossilFriday A nice cranium (albeit partially reconstructed) of the early #Miocene #notoungulate Proadinotherium muensteri.🇦🇷It is one of the earliest toxodontids, the last-surviving group of notoungulates (named for #Pleistocene Toxodon). From @FieldMuseum collections.

#FossilFriday 🇦🇷Happy #DarwinDay! Everyone knows Darwin's finches, but what about his South American ungulates, like #Pleistocene Toxodon (a #notoungulate)? They helped convince him that species went extinct because these mammals clearly did not belong to any living group.

#FossilFriday 🇦🇷Skull of #Pleistocene Mesotherium, the last typothere #notoungulate, from @naturales_unlp.
Its first (unofficial) name - Typotherium - was popular for many years; it gave rise to the suborder Typotheria, which is still valid even though the genus name is not!

#FossilFriday 🇦🇷Part of a small #notoungulate jaw from the middle #Miocene of #Argentina. Since part of the bone is missing, you can see how its ever-growing #teeth extend far into its jaw - a characteristic feature of many notoungulates.

#FossilFriday Three stages in the life of a 35 million-year-old #notoungulate jaw from #Chile 🇨🇱: in the rock, in the hand, and in the lab. (Despite the big canine, it was a plant-eater!)

#FossilFriday 🐴~25 million-year-old Rhynchippus equinus from @FieldMuseum collections. Its name includes both the Greek & Latin words for #horse, but it is a South American #notoungulate, very distantly related. For more info on "notohippids," check out https://t.co/vMcR8yE0dd

#FossilFriday 🇨🇱🧠25 million-year-old #notoungulate #brain (sort of) from #Chile.
The gray blob is a natural cast of the inside of the cranial cavity (an endocast), and it can still provide lots of useful information!
But the other side of the specimen is more photogenic.

#FossilFriday 🇦🇷Holotype of the ~15 million-year-old #notoungulate Eutypotherium lehmannnitschei. Mesotheres like this were medium-sized digging #mammals that may have been South America's version of #wombats. (PS: The three "n's" in its name are not a typo!) #Miocene #teeth
