Maj Singh made the supreme sacrifice #OnThisDay 13 October in 1987 Jaffna #OPPawan in the ops to extricate the men of 10 PARA & 13 SIKH LI
Major N J Dutta Singh was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. As a company Commander, he led the battalion's advance east of the road Vasavilan-Uramparai. He vigorously pressed and cleared pockets of resistance, facing heavy and accurate militant fire all through the night of 12 October 1987.
On 13 October 1987, he covered the operation to extricate the Para Commandos and 13 Sikh LI. He, with one platoon, moved to a vantage point. This platoon provided the most crucial fire support, but soon came under an overwhelming attack by the militants.
His position was being continuously attacked and he radioed the Officiating Commanding officer asking for urgent reinforcements and ammunition. Even while this was being organised, he radioed, “I am out of ammunition and am charging through. Goodbye and out”
He brought out his khukri and, with two more men, charged and killed the LTTE militants. Unfortunately, he was grievously injured and succumbed to his injuries.
#LestWeForgetIndia🇮🇳 The gallant #IndianBrave & his men fought fiercely and lived up to the Battalion moto, काफर हुनु भन्दा मर्नु निको - Kafar Hunu Bhanda Marnu Niko (It is better to die than be a coward)

Havildar Ajit Singh, Vir Chakra (P), 10 PARA (SF), laid down his life fighting LTTE militants in Sri Lanka during #OpPawan #OnThisDay 28 August in 1989.
Hav Singh was one of the Squad commanders of 3 Troop of Alfa Assault Team 10 Para Commando. On 28 August 1989, No. 3 Troop located at Alampil Sri Lanka, was tasked to carry out a search and destroy mission along the road Alampil – Mullaitivu. The troop commander of number 3 Troop deployed Hav Singh’s Squad with a rocket launcher on the flank to cover the move of the Troop. The troop came under fire of small arms and rockets.
Hav Singh realising that the troop had been ambushed by the militants, returned the fire. However, assessing that the strength and position of the militants was formidable, he decided to encircle them.
The #IndianBrave deployed his squad on the flank and brought down continuous and effective fire on the militants. This threat on the flank diverted the attention of the militants and reduced the weight of fire on the remainder of the troops.
In the ensuing, exchange of fire, a rocket launcher detachment paratrooper was wounded and a rocket launcher detachment commander was killed.
Hav Singh himself picked up the rocket launcher and commenced firing. In the process, Hav Singh received a bullet in the chest and fell on the spot.
For his leadership, conspicuous courage and valour in action, Hav Singh was awarded the Vir Chakra (Posthumous).

On 29 July 1989, information regarding the frequent move of militants in Tanniyuttu town in Sri Lanka was received. Accordingly, an ambush was planned. Rfn Singh was Light Machine Gunner No.1 in the ambush platoon. As the ambush was located in a built-up area, the militants received information regarding their presence.
At about 1220 hours, militants numbering 60 to 80 opened heavy fire on the ambush party. Rfn Singh responded immediately and engaged the militants effectively. While firing, he suddenly saw a group of militants rushing to the neighbouring section to snatch the weapons from the injured soldiers. Unmindful of the risk to his life and with tremendous courage, he rushed with his light machine gun and brought down heavy fire on the militants, inflicting casualties on them.
The militants fired back but had to beat a hasty retreat due to this onslaught. Rfn Singh was hit and laid down his life. He fought gallantly to save his fellow-soldiers and their weapons.
Rifleman Mohan Singh displayed conspicuous courage and valour in the face of the militants and made the supreme sacrifice. He was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously. 🏵

On 23 July 1988, Bravo and Delta Companies of 16 SIKH On 23 July 1988, Bravo and Delta Companies of 16 SIKH were tasked to search an area in Sri Lanka.
At about 1030 hours, 11 Platoon came under heavy fire of militants. At the same time, Delta Company started closing in from the East. They also came under heavy fire. Delta company decided to launch an attack.
One General Purpose Machine Gun was taking heavy toll of the assaulting troops. L/Nk Singh, Light Machine Gun number 1, fired at the bunker from the hip position. He realised that his fire had little impact on small loopholes.
He dashed towards the GPMG and caught the barrel of GPMG. He received the full burst of fire and died on the spot, his act silenced the militants’ GPMG as the militant gunners fled in apprehension of the charging.
This made it possible for the assaulting company to move forward and capture the hideout.
His personal example of supreme sacrifice inspired his comrades to rush forward with vengeance and capture the camp.
L/Nk Singh displayed conspicuous courage and valour in action against the militants.
The #IndianBrave was awarded Vir Chakra posthumously.

Long gone, but not forgotten
#LestWeForgetIndia🇮🇳 Major Surinder Singh, Vir Chakra (P), 16 RAJ RIF, made the supreme sacrifice, chasing and neutralising militants in Sri Lanka, as part of #IPKF #OpPawan, #OnThisDay 05 June in 1989.
Maj Singh was tasked to approach a suspected militant hideout in an area east of Puttar in Sri Lanka. He located and identified the hideout. Thereafter, he decided to raid it.
On 5 June 1989, Maj Singh organised his patrol of 15 men and went on the raid, during which he shot two militants.
The patrol observed two militants fleeing the hut. The officer, without worrying about his safety, decided to chase the fleeing militants. In the hut were the two militants earlier shot by him.
As he ran past the hut, one militant opened fire at point-blank range on Maj Singh and injured him seriously. Despite the injury to his chest, the Brave turned round, shot dead the injured militant, and continued chasing the militants till he collapsed.
He refused to be attended to and directed his personnel to pursue the militants. Eventually, one of the fleeing militants was shot dead. Soon after the operation, the officer was evacuated to a field hospital, where he was declared dead.
Maj Singh was conferred with a posthumous Vir Chakra.

THIRTY-SEVEN years to date -
#LestWeForgetIndia🇮🇳 Naik Mahavir Singh, Vir Chakra (P), 7 RAJ RIF, despite being grievously injured, neutralised two militants before making the supreme sacrifice #OnThisDay 31 May in 1989 during #OpPawan, Sri Lanka
On the 31 May 1989 Naik Mahavir Singh, a radio operator of 7 Rajputana Rifles inducted into Sri Lanka, was entrusted with the task of establishing a block along with five other personnel to prevent militants from escaping.
His group was fired at by the militants who were attempting to escape. Nk Singh reacted instantly and returned the fire. He then gave immediate chase along with the platoon commander to prevent the militants from escaping.
Nk Singh and his platoon commander were hit and injured. Disregarding his injury on his chest, Nk Singh continued to crawl forward to close on and locate the militants, who had holed up in the bush. Having located the militants he engaged them with his carbine, killing both the militants holed up there. This led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles.
However, Nk Singh succumbed to his injuries while he was being evacuated.
Naik Mahavir Singh, thus, displayed conspicuous courage, initiative and valour in action against the militants and made the supreme sacrifice.
The #IndianBrave was awarded the Vir Chakra (Posthumous).

Lieutenant Colonel Abjit Singh Sekhon,
Vir Chakra (P),
Commanding Officer 7 MADRAS
Lt Col Sekhon laid down his life leading from the front- fighting the LTTE, #OnThisDay 21 April in 1988 in Sri Lanka, during #OpPawan
Lt Col Sekhon, CO 7 Madras, was deployed in Sri Lanka as a part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force.
On 13 April 1988, he received information about the location of an arms cache at a place called Vannerikulam as also the presence of some hard-core militants.
He exercised imagination and calculated risk and approached the target areas in vehicles along a hitherto unmapped and sparsely used tract. He reached his target areas undetected and completely surprised the militants. In this action, Lt Col Sekhon who was guiding the column killed two hard-core militants one of whom was found to be the Area Leader.
Again on 21 April 1988, when information was received about the presence of 10 to 14 militants in village Urithirapuram, he gathered two platoons and along with another officer, personally led the column to the site of the militants.
The party came under intense fire from the militants.
He jumped out of his vehicle and despite the intense militant fire, organized his party and returned the fire. He personally shot dead one militant and wounded another. It was at this stage of the encounter that Lt Col Sekhon was hit by a militant’s bullet through the chest and he fell on the spot.
Throughout the operation, Lt Col Sekhon displayed gallantry and valour in the face of militants and made the supreme sacrifice.
