A really fun play-based geometry exploration lesson for elementary students using some of the @MLCmath
online tools. Amazing work from our @OSUehe #OSUElemMath teachers! #iteachmath #elemmathchat

@MissErinOSU A9 #OSUElemMath When discussing dilemmas in the classroom regarding terminology and language barriers, it is important to consider consistent use of group work and collaboration, conferencing with the use of formal and informal language, and most importantly-
@MissErinOSU A9 #OSUElemMath I can remember at the beginning of a new math lesson learning all the terms that would be used and having to write down the definitions. I do think that this could be a helpful tool but after the reading I think peer collaboration is key. (1/2)
@MissErinOSU A9 #OSUElemMath I appreciated the reading because it definitely gave me a way to handle a situation when there is a disagreement in formal language definitions or when a concept is being misinterpreted. The teacher does a good job of making the students work through it. (1/2)
@miss_shelbyg A8 #OSUElemMath I would definitely us an approach similar to Murphy’s! I would let students work on the problem without any guidance or instruction so that they can try their own strategies. Additionally, I would make sure the problem is action-based so that is easier 1/2
@miss_shelbyg A8 #OSUElemMath The biggest takeaway I got from the reading is that when introducing Equal Share problems, they need to be relatable to the students and the sets of the quantities in the story need to be representable. The way Ms. Murphy approached the lesson is definitely
@miss_shelbyg A8 #OSUElemMath One can introduce equal sharing using a problem or situation where there were two entities or people wanting to split an object between them equally in order to share fairly. A way they could do this would be through sharing food, drink, or another object (1/ ).
@miss_shelbyg #OSUElemMath 1/2 I really like that the teachers let the students work on the problems how they wanted and I think that this is a great way to encourage different thinking and problem-solving. I also think that a great way to let students work through problems is by giving
@miss_shelbyg #Q8 #OSUElemMath Equal Sharing fractions was always a favorite of mine even though I never felt like a strong math person in class. I love the endless amount of manipulatives students can play around with when introducing fractions. My most FAVORITE memory is having a (1/2)
@miss_shelbyg A8 #OSUElemMath I would do something similar as the examples in the book. I like how the students were left on their own to try to solve the problem using manipulatives. I would use candy or something similar and have them divide it up for different numbers and compare the parts.
@miss_shelbyg #OSUElemMath When introducing equal sharing I think that the teachers in the read had a good way of introduction. The students had been doing division already, so giving them a problem where division is the algorithm was a good way to connect and introduce the material (1)
@miss_shelbyg A8 I think food was the best way to teach fractions. Children are more aware of sliced pizza than painting part of a garage door (I'm looking at you, 1125). I would use Ms. Murphy's discovery learning approach and let them get to the vocabulary "half" on their own. #OSUElemMath
@miss_shelbyg A8 #OSUElemMath I would like to be able to provide students with a problem that somehow relates to their own lives and deals with putting things into groups. I would give them manipulatives to work with and demonstrate their thinking. I also think that having problems that relate

During the equal sharing portion, I would love to say that I would rather start with manipulative objects or tangible problem solving methods, but it is important to remember to cultivate your students’ thought with an open mind.
@miss_shelbyg A8 #OSUElemMath I would use methods similar to both teachers. They simply posed a problem and left it open to the students for how they wanted to solve it. Providing manipulatives from the start could have been better for supporting students, but discussion afterwards was key.
@miss_shelbyg A8 #OSUElemMath Reading through ch.2, I really liked the way that Ms. Murphy approached equal sharing with her students. She engaged her students with use of a manipulative while also encouraging students to relate the problem to their own lives - asking what happens when (1/2)
@miss_shelbyg A8 #OSUElemMath I really like how Ms. Murphy began her K/1st grade lesson on Equal Sharing by using a situation relatable to the students. She first gives them time to work alone, but I wish they had been given manipulatives to work with by themselves first instead of (1/2)
