DRILLS SHOWDOWN IGNITES CAMP SPIRIT AS PLATOON 7 EMERGES CHAMPION The 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin, Oyo State, witnessed a thrilling display of discipline, teamwork and military precision as the State Coordinator, Mr. Kayode Ola Peters, officially declared the Inter-Platoon Drills Competition open. Addressing Corps Members before the commencement of the event, he urged them to exhibit the values of sportsmanship, commitment, resilience and discipline which they had cultivated throughout the orientation programme. He noted that the rigorous drills training was designed to prepare the corps members for the demands of national service by fostering obedience, cooperation and dedication to duty. Mr. Peters described the drills competition as the climax of the physical training component of the orientation exercise, emphasizing that its significance extends beyond physical fitness. According to him, the exercise serves as a practical assessment of the unity, discipline, camaraderie and collective spirit developed among Corps Members during their stay in camp. He commended the participants for their determination and endurance throughout the training period, stressing that such qualities remain essential to the successful realization of the objectives of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme. Delivering his welcome address, the Camp Commandant, Captain FD Yarri, underscored the broader objectives of the drills competition, stating that discipline begins on the parade ground. He explained that the exercise was carefully designed to instill discipline, enhance smartness and promote teamwork among Corps Members. These attributes, he noted, are indispensable not only for a successful service year but also for responsible citizenship and effective participation in nation-building. He encouraged the corps members on parade to approach the competition with focus, confidence and a determination to excel. Speaking on the evaluation criteria, the Chief Judge, Major SO Ibitoye, charged the competing platoons to give their very best, emphasizing that excellence remains non-negotiable. He commended the platoon instructors for their dedication, professionalism and effective training methods which were evident in the performance of the Corps Members. Throughout the competition, judges carefully assessed key elements including voice of command, mental alertness, teamwork, precision in execution of drills, saluting procedures and overall coordination, all of which reflected the confidence, commitment and preparedness of the corps members. At the conclusion of the keenly contested event, Platoon 7 emerged overall winner to secure the first position, while Platoon 10 claimed second place and Platoon 1 finished third. Platoon 8 placed tenth. The competition showcased remarkable discipline and synchronization across the participating platoons, highlighting the effectiveness of the orientation course in building leadership qualities, cooperation and mutual respect among Corps Members drawn from diverse backgrounds. A major highlight of the event was the recognition of the Best Overall Parade Commander, an honour awarded to Corps Member Odunbaku Joshua Abiola of Platoon 10, with State Code OY/26B/2540, for his exceptional command, composure and outstanding performance on the parade ground. The event attracted principal camp officials, heads of collaborating agencies and other dignitaries who applauded the corps members for their impressive display.
