Meeting diverse role models and mentors is critical for inspiring the next generation of ocean explorers. At #OceanExplorersMiami, @UMiamiRSMAS faculty & students (including Olympic swimmer Remedy Rule and national diving champion Mia Vallee) shared career connections and advice.
At “The Ripple Effect” station, #OceanExplorersMiami investigated the impact of ocean pH on animals with calcium carbonate skeletons, like #corals. Students saw first hand the potential impacts #OceanAcidification can have on local coral reefs like those in @FloridaKeysNMS!
In "Marine World Magnified (@NOAAFisheries/@UMiamiRSMAS) and “Fintastic Faces” (@Cnidarians_Rock/@Cnidarians_Rock), #OceanExplorersMiami students were challenged to examine microscope specimens to match larvae to the adult #fish (mirroring their own journey towards adulthood).
#OceanExplorersMiami participants interacted with marine invertebrates, tested samples for microplastics, visited an underwater archeology lab, and toured a research vessel. These stations aimed to increase interest in #STEM, environmental stewardship, and ocean science careers.
#OceanExplorersMiami was an immersive field trip at @UMiamiRSMAS that provided experiential learning for 100 students from underserved schools. Students "got their hands wet" at 14 stations featuring topics like #CoralReef restoration, #OceanAcidification, and underwater robots!
