Fact # 12 - Octopuses inhabit various regions of the ocean, including coral reefs, pelagic waters, and the seabed; some live in the intertidal zone and others at abyssal depths. 🌍🌊 #Habitat
Fact #13- Both Octopuses & Octopi are the correct terminologies for multiple or a group of Octopus. With Octopuses being the more common of the two used worldwide. 🐙🐙🐙🌏
Fact #14- Octopuses are solitary creatures that spend much of their time in dens—small holes and crevices in rocks and coral. They are generally solitary and territorial. 🏠🧘♀️#Solitude

1. 🐙 Did you know? The word 'Octopus' comes from Ancient Greek and means 'eight feet'.
2. Octopuses are incredibly diverse, with over 300 species found in every ocean on Earth! Some are less than an inch long, while others can grow up to 30 feet. 🌊✨️🐙 #MarineLife
3. Octopuses are descendants of ancient cephalopods that had protective shells. Over time, they evolved to become faster and more agile by shedding these shells. 🐚🐙 #Evolution
4. Not all octopuses have eight arms! In 2022, a fossil of a vampyropod with ten functional limbs was discovered, making it the oldest known octopus ancestor at 328 million years old. 🦑💪 #Paleontology
5. Octopuses are masters of disguise and escape, able to squeeze into holes bigger than their beak and eyeballs to hide from predators or escape aquariums when bored. 🎩😶🌫️#HoudiniOfTheSea
6. Fun fact: Octopus blood is blue! This is due to high amounts of a copper-based pigment called hemocyanin, which helps transport oxygen more efficiently in cold environments with low oxygen levels. 💙 #Biology
7. Each of an octopus's arms 🐙💪can detect chemicals, essentially tasting and smelling whatever they touch. They can also think independently! 🤔 #AnimalIntelligence
8. Octopuses can breathe through their skin, absorbing up to 41% of their oxygen requirements while resting and 33% while swimming. 🏊♂️🐙 #Adaptation
9. Female octopuses 🐙die after their eggs have hatched, dedicating their final months to protecting their eggs from any danger. 🥚🤱#Motherhood

After reading @SyTheAuthor's "The Soul of an Octopus' In 2015, Sy mentioned that the octopus had been misrepresented throughout history and made out to be a monster-- as a neurodivergent kid, our founder @octowarren could intimately relate to the experience of being unfairly judged and having a future painted by adults that seemed devoid of hope and promise.
"Why not reimagine the octopus and take control of the story?" Warren thought. "If @WaltDisneyCo can turn a mouse into a globally beloved figure-- then It's possible to do the same with octopus!"
Fast forward to today...
🐙 OctoNation's educational content and resources reached over 500 million people In 2022 online.
🐙 We've consulted numerous news organizations, brands, and creators making sure that octopuses are portrayed accurately. From @Meta, to @GWR, to @NatGeo, to @ExplorersClub, and more!
We have a small team-- but a mighty global network of underwater photographers, scientists, researchers, authors, artists, dive masters, & cephalopod enthusiasts that are working together to map wonder to the ocean through the lens of an octopus!
