Last month, I was in Hong Kong to participate in multiple events, including the #OneEarthSummit hosted by the @hkmagovhk, the Global Investors' Symposium hosted by the @MilkenInstitute, and a crucial meeting on Impact Investing and Catalytic Philanthropy convened by the @wef. These platforms offered profound insights into our collective approach towards climate and nature action, challenging us to think bigger and act more boldly.
Here are my key takeaways from these discussions:
1. Cities in Asia play a pivotal role in achieving net-zero emissions through energy infrastructure and alternative fuels. With over $3 trillion needed annually for climate and nature transitions, how can we increase funding in emerging markets without deepening their debt?
2. According to Knight Frank’s 2022 Wealth Report, Asia boasts the highest proportion of next-generation wealth, surpassing North America and Europe. Notably, this demographic prioritizes “impact investing and philanthropy” as the primary driver in investment strategy and asset allocation decisions. How can we foster cross-sector collaboration to utilize this shift in addressing the climate and nature crises?
3. According to estimates by the SDG Philanthropy Platform, $651 billion in philanthropic giving for the SDGs could potentially be unlocked by 2030. How can we harness private philanthropy's appetite for risk and innovation to address the systemic challenges identified in the SDG framework?
These dialogues have sparked critical questions about our shared responsibility in this transformative era. How can we all contribute to addressing these urgent challenges? What are your thoughts on these crucial questions?
Beyond the stimulating discussions, last month was also an incredible opportunity to forge new connections and catch up with old friends. The path ahead is fraught with challenges, but through collaboration and shared determination, we can overcome them.
