❌❌❌ illegal pushback of more than 600 women, children and vulnerable men and a violation of international law 🇲🇹
#Malta unashamedly pushed back to Libya people fleeing conflicts and persecution, amongst them women and over 20 children just a few nautical miles from its shores.
On the 24th of May, a fishing vessel that left Libya with over 600 #people got stranded at sea and were in touch with @alarm_phone to seek help, @alarm_phone phone followed the case with heavy attention until they lost contact to the people who later would be seen disembarking in #Benghazi.
In a video released by the Libyan Navy, an #Egyptian national holding his child, gives account on how they were forcibly intercepted at the coast of #Malta 🇲🇹 and stowed/pulled back to #Libya by the military forces.
This is not something new which Malta has been doing for years in bleach of national and international human rights standards and the rights to asylum.
The people deported to #Libya are now detained in a heavily crowded detention camp with little access to the most basic human needs, in the camp women are #raped, #sexually abused, men tortured and extorted with others being put to forced #labour and the less fortunate ones are left to rot in prisons without any judiciary review.
We reiterate that the migratory policies drawn by #Europe ought to change and be revised accordingly with respect and protection to all human rights standards.
On the very day, Italy illegally pushed back 27 people who fled the repeated circle of #tortures and #humiliations in #Libya.
These #people are basically being denied access to the so-called #democracies in #Europe and this must #stop #immediately.
