It is likely that God did not want Israel to amass these animals of war for themselves (Deuteronomy 17:16, Isaiah 31:1). It could have been tempting, as well, for Israel to use these chariots against their attackers, rather than rely solely on Yahweh’s promise that “tomorrow at this time [He] will give all of them over, slain, before Israel.” (v.6)
Some boast in chariots and some in horses, but we will boast in the name of Yahweh, our God. - Psalms 20:7

Does this event cause you to doubt God’s goodness in any way or does it serve to demonstrate God’s holiness and the seriousness of sin?

There seems to be two prevailing theories here: either the being was an angel of the Lord, or God Himself (either a theophany or the pre-incarnate Christ). The fact that Joshua falls on his face and offers worship to the being and is not rebuked for it is telling, however, since angels rightly refuse worship (Revelation 22:8-9).
It is my belief that this is a Christophany, or a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ. Not only does He tell Joshua that the ground on which he stands is holy (as God told Moses in Exodus 3:5), Jesus is also described as leading (commanding) the Lord’s armies in Revelation 19:11-14.
