Operation Pluto: The underwater lifeline for the Allied Invasion of Normandy During World War II, the success of the Allied invasion of Normandy, codenamed Operation Overlord, depended on a vital but unconventional operation: Operation Pluto, which stood for "Pipeline Under the Ocean" or "Pipeline Underwater Transportation of Oil." Recognizing that petrol, oil, and lubricants would make up a substantial portion of the supplies needed for the expeditionary forces, the British War Office and engineers devised a groundbreaking solution. Pipelines laid beneath the English Channel would significantly reduce the reliance on coastal tankers, which were susceptible to bad weather and air attacks, and required offloading into vulnerable storage tanks ashore. To meet this need, two innovative pipeline types––named "Hais" and "Hamel" after their inventors––were developed. Camouflaged pumping stations were strategically placed at Sandown on the Isle of Wight and at Dungeness on the Kent coast, both connected to the Avonmouth-Thames pipeline. Two pipeline systems were installed, "Bambi" from Sandown to Cherbourg, and "Dumbo" from Dungeness to Boulogne. The deployment of the Bambi system began on August 12, 1944, but it had limited success, delivering only 3,300 long tons between September 22 and October 4, when the project was terminated. In contrast, the Dumbo system thrived, with the first pipeline pumping on October 26 and continuing until the end of the war. By December, a total of 17 pipelines had been laid. The Dumbo system ceased operations on August 7, 1945, having transported a staggering 180 million imperial gallons of petrol (just under 820 million litres). Operation Pluto's underwater pipelines played a crucial role, accounting for about 8% of petroleum product deliveries from the United Kingdom to the Allied Expeditionary Force in North West Europe.
