The high "attention stocks" (top trading activity among retail investors), significantly outperform overnight than during regular trading hours. Some examples from meme stock mania in the picture.
Explanation: Microstructure of the market coupled with higher retail activity (ever since Covid-19 checks were flushed into the market).
Liquidity is deeper at close, but shallow at open, so given orders at the open have outsized price impact. Retail traders often place orders at the open (after deciding during non-market hours), while institutional orders cluster at the close.
Retail are more prone to follow the mania, and all-in, or at least have outsized risk position in meme stocks. Institutional investors do more diversified, balanced approach, and tend to sell their long positions after crazy daily rallies.
The more a stock belongs to retail mania, the more likely it is to outperform overnight.
