In the Polish military-analytical segment of the Internet, discussions are heating up regarding the information published by Gazeta Polska Codziennie with reference to a letter from the Polish Ministry of Defense to the Military Aircraft Plant No. 2, allegedly about the lack of financial resources from the Polish Ministry of National Defense to purchase Have Glass V radar-absorbing paint/coating (RAP) for coating 48 F-16C/D Block 52+ multirole fighters in order to reduce their effective reflective surface.
In light of the signing of multi-billion dollar contracts for the supply of about 500 HIMARS MLRS and 32 5th generation F-35A fighters, information about the difficulties in acquiring Have Glass V kits looks at least strange.
We are more interested in the question: how many times can this coating reduce the F-16C Block 52+’s ERS and how many times will the detection range of such machines be reduced by various SAM radars and onboard radars of Russian Aerospace Forces fighters?
The dark-grey radio-absorbing ferromagnetic coating Have Glass V (colour — FS36170) based on a polyurethane base with a microscopic granular ferromagnetic metal fraction reduces the standard RCS of the F-16C with weapons on the suspension units by 76% (from 5 to 1.2 sq. m) or 4.17 times compared to an unpainted machine. If we consider this reduction factor in relation to the detection range by radars operating in the S/G/X/J-bands of waves, we get a reduction in the detection range by 30%.
Thus, if the N035 Irbis-E radar of the Su-35S fighter detects a standard F-16C without coating at a distance of 400 km, then with the Have Glass V coating the detection range will decrease to 276 km, the capture range - to 229 km, provided that the AN / ALQ-131 container electronic warfare system on the F-16C is turned off. In the case of an electronic warfare system operating on radiation, the capture range can decrease to 180 - 130 km. The 9S36M illumination and guidance radar of the 9A317M Buk-M3 self-propelled launcher is capable of locking on an F-16C without coating at an altitude of 10,000 m at a distance of 98.5 km for precise autotracking, and with the Have Glass V coating at a similar altitude at a distance of 68 km.
As you can see, the tactical advantage of the RPM is obvious, but the Have Glass V coating does not provide an image intensifier similar to that of 5th generation machines (0.3 - 0.05 sq. m)
