#TherianThursday from the comfortable social distance of home! #PALEO419 has gone digital! As a preview of what is to come, check out this awesome fossil camel relative! Not a group of animals you'd expect to originate in North America but there they go. Subverting expectations.

#TheropodThursday from the #Ualberta campus! #PALEO419 is well into mammals this week but I forgot to include our last #dinosaur group, the coelurosaurs! Representing them is #velociraptor #notreallyvelociraptor! These critters among it's close relatives exemplify the bird link.

Anyone for #ThyreophoraThursday? A few weeks ago #PALEO419 was doing an overview of Thyreophora and Sauropodomorpha. Unfortunately sauropodomorpha doesn't alliterate as well with a day of the week ... SO enjoy Pinacosaurus in all of its ornate glory! #paleontology #UAlberta

This week from #PALEO419! We have started into synapsids! To showcase early synapsids, these lovely therapsid carnivores will pave the way. The first photo shows the biarnisuchians showing off their caniniforms, desperate to join team Gorgonopsidae (next photo). #FossilFriday

Last week in #PALEO419 we started in a two week binge of #theropods! Showcasing last week was Monolophosaurus! In a time following the double-crested dilophosaurids, Monolophosaurus dared the unthinkable in trying a single rugose boss along its snoot. You go girl! #FossilFriday

#FossilFriday from last weeks #PALEO419! Progressive protrusion of pachycephalosaur progeny! While all these specimens are different species, they do highlight the progressive stages of "doming" pachycephalosaurs go through as they mature. #ontogeny #paleontology #ualberta

This little #pterosaur is feeling faint. It's a "pterrible" realization that its days of soaring the skies are over. Being a skeleton and all ... #FossilFriday #PALEO419 #ualberta #paleontology

It's a frigid #FossilFriday here in #Edmonton! But #PALEO419 has started up at #ualberta and the students have started off looking at early archosaurs and crocodylomorphs! Pictured is the neosuchians, Paralligator (left), allihatoroid and a partial dentary of Leidyosuchus (right)

Last day of #PALEO419 lab! The evolutionary path of equids is well represented in the fossil record. Imaged is a domestic horse skull (back) and a cast of Mesohippus (front). The other image shows reduction in digits from Colodon (right) to Pliohippus (left). #FossilFriday

Happy #EASTER everyone! All #FossilFriday are good Fridays, but for the season the #PALEO419 lab has paleo-easter bunnies! These skulls belong to Oligocene rabbits known as Paleolagus. They are compared to a modern rabbit for perspective. #EasterWeekend2018

#PALEO419 brings you cat vs dogs on a slightly larger scale. Relative to geological time it wasn't so long ago that sabre-toothed cats and dire wolves roamed over North America. This #FossilFriday appreciate the manageable size of our contemporary furry friends!

#FossilFriday you're back so soon! Well #PALEO419 has got your fix! This week students learned about awesome mammals such as Xanarthrans. Featured is the skull of a giant ground sloth, Glossotherium (left) and the osteoderms from the armadillo relative, Glyptodon (right).

It's #FossilFriday once again and #PALEO419 is trucking along! This week we are looking at stem mammals and tooth variation within. Multituberculates (model lower jaw and fossil tooth below) had specialized lower premolars that have a blade-like appearance with numerous ridges.

#FossilFriday has arrived! This week from #PALEO419 the start of synapsids. The theme is caniniform teeth. A trait shared by many synapsids, they are obvious on the therapsid (yellow cast) and the dicynodont (red cast). Sure they both have them, but who wore them better?

Hello #FossilFriday friends! No #PALEO419 class this week due to reading week. So this week I visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum and got some pictures of their exploded skull Daspletosaurus! When classes start again we will be talking about synapsids, so enjoy token Dimetrodon.

Oh hello #FossilFriday! Come check out what UofA students looked at in #PALEO419 lab this week. Coelurosauria (more theropods)! One of the highlights was the arctometatarsalian condition, where the 3rd metatarsal (middle) is pinched out by the 2nd and 4th. Cast of Gallimimus pes.

Hi there #FossilFriday! This week in #PALEO419 students are learning about theropods. So I thought I would post about those wacky dilophosauroids, and what better one than this cast of Cryolophosaurus! Sporting an unusual mediolateral crest rather than toe the mid-line.

When carrying large objects on either end of your axial skeleton, it's important to take the strain off your muscles. For a sweet tail club (<-), try tightly interlocking your caudal vertebrae. For a fabulous head just fuse up your first 3 cervicals (->). #FossilFriday #PALEO419

All the fossils! This week in #PALEO419 students are learning about the traits and relationships of two major ornithischian groups: Ornithopoda and Marginocephalia. Zach has shown up early to review the taxa and their synapomorphies. Happy #FossilFriday everybody!

Today in #PALEO419 students got to look at pterosaur fossils and learn about their specialized anatomy. The arrow is pointing to a specialized wrist bone unique to pterosaurs, the pteroid. This bone supports the propatagium and acts like the alula of a bird. #FossilFriday.
