DICON VOLUME N˚27 DAY6 #PERFECTDAY6 (B-type) Interview 01. History: THE TIME OF LIFE A band that sells out large concert venues in an instant, creates reverse-run chart miracles, dominates music charts, embarks on massive world tours, and earns the title Mitdae ("Trustworthy DAY6" – a band you can trust to), DAY6 achieved all this through a decade of relentless effort. From the start, DAY6 was different. Unlike typical K-pop groups that release profile photos and teasers before debuting to introduce members’ faces and concepts, DAY6 boldly skipped this process. “Please come and support us! DAY6 asks for your love!” (YoungK, July 31, 2015). On that day, the members took to the streets of Hongdae, carrying a large bucket and handing out lollipops to passersby. “We’re debuting as a rookie band. Please come to our show!” they called out, introducing themselves: “D-A-Y, 6, DAY6!” That day, they performed at Live Club Day, a small stage close enough to touch the audience. With only a few dozen attendees, they gave their all, showcasing skill unbelievable for a debut performance. JYP CEO, Park Jinyoung, bet on the members’ songwriting and talent alone. He declared, “They’ll climb step-by-step from the ground up, aiming to become a band recognized for their skill.” The Band’s Beginning “DAY6 Showcase! Free entry! First come, first served!” DAY6 promoted themselves directly. On September 6, 2015, they held their debut showcase, officially debuting the next day, September 7. They expressed gratitude to their fans first and vowed to deliver their “best” and “good music.” “Thank you for coming to see us, despite our shortcomings, and for cheering us on. We’ll strive to become a DAY6 that brings you better music and performances.” (Sungjin, September 2015). “We’ll work hard to bring great music, great performances, and a great image. Even if it’s not today or tomorrow, please trust and wait for us—we’ll make it happen.” (YoungK). With this commitment, they charged forward. They didn’t appear on music shows. Instead, they performed with indie bands and busked on the streets, honing their skills and building a foundation as a true band. Before debuting, DAY6 practiced 14 hours a day and logged over 100 hours of band rehearsals. They trained in instruments, vocals, and even songwriting. This intense effort and real-world experience made them all-rounders. Unlike typical bands, they don’t have a distinct vocal position—every member plays an instrument and sings, creating standout harmonies in every song through their exceptional skill. Made by DAY6 In November 2015, DAY6 held their first concert, with about 500 seats per show (two shows total). In 2016, they released ‘DAYDREAM’, with all members participating in writing and composing every track, following their debut album. From 2017, they fully embraced their singer-songwriter identity with the ‘Every DAY6’ project, releasing two self-written songs monthly. They poured their passion into creating, writing, and releasing music consistently. Their dedication shines in songs like I Loved You, with its striking intro featuring natural sounds, members recorded crickets at dawn in the rain themselves. In I’m Alone, percussion instruments like tambourines, xylophones, and shakers, sourced by the members from stationery stores, enrich the sound. They paid attention to the smallest details to elevate quality. Their signature song, You Were Beautiful, also emerged during this time. Though it didn’t gain much attention initially, it sparked a reverse-run chart phenomenon seven years later.
