Permanent Magnets Limited ( #PERMAGN ) — Can it be a proxy to the upcoming Physical AI (Robots) boom?
Permanent Magnets Limited is a 65-year-old Mumbai-based specialty components maker. Its core business manufactures current sensors for EV inverters, shunts and current transformers for smart electricity meters, specialty cobalt-nickel alloys for aerospace and defense, and latching relays (launching H2 FY27). Revenue: ₹225 crore. The company is small, lightly covered, and not obviously an AI play — which is precisely the point.
The macro tailwind:
The world is running a massive experiment in Physical AI — humanoid robots, automated factories, and intelligent machines that move through the real world. The critical enabling material is the neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnet, which powers the compact electric motors that give robots human-like strength and precision. Global NdFeB demand is growing at 12% annually toward ~$72 billion by 2030. China produces 90% of the world's supply and began restricting exports in 2025, creating an urgent push to build alternative supply chains. India has no domestic NdFeB producer at scale.
The #NdFeB option:
In 2023, PML incorporated Quantum Magnetics as a wholly-owned subsidiary to enter this market. In August 2025, Quantum signed a 50-50 joint venture with Singapore-based Lorentic Pte Ltd, targeting 5,000 tonnes of NdFeB capacity by 2030, which management values at ₹3,000–4,000 crore of annual revenue at full scale. Today, Quantum has zero commercial NdFeB revenue. China's export restrictions halted their initial assembly business. Phase 2 — machining NdFeB blocks into finished magnets — is planned for late FY27. Full manufacturing is a FY29–30 story. The technology and capital risks are real, with ₹550–750 crore still to be raised. But if Quantum even partially executes, it would be transformative relative to PML's current ₹800 crore market cap.
The existing business is itself a Physical AI play:
This is what most investors miss. PML's current sensing segment makes hall-effect sensors that sit inside every electric motor controller, exactly what every robot joint, EV inverter, and factory servo drive requires. They already supply global Tier 1 auto companies, just launched a standard sensor product line at ₹200–500 per unit, and are actively winning Indian EV two-wheeler customers. Every motor in the Physical AI economy needs a current sensor. PML makes them. Their current transformer business (nanocrystalline cores with in-house ribbon production) supplies what AI data centers need for power monitoring at scale. And the alloys division — cobalt-nickel superalloys for aerospace and defense — is the near-term earnings driver: management guided 3–4× revenue growth in FY27 alone from a capacity expansion already commissioned and running at 80–90% utilization.
It's currently the "only proxy" which is listed in the Indian stock-market:
In Indian listed markets, no other publicly traded company is building domestic NdFeB capacity. When the government's ₹7,300 crore PLI scheme for rare earth magnets is formalized and Physical AI coverage intensifies in Indian financial media, investors will search for a listed vehicle. PML is the only answer a screener returns. Narrative-driven re-ratings in Indian small-caps routinely precede business proof by 12–24 months — as Sterlite Technologies demonstrated with fiber optics, surging 9× in under a year once the AI infrastructure story was recognized.
The risks:
Management consistently delivers 12–18 months behind their own guidance. The relay business has already slipped once. Quantum's manufacturing path requires technology from an unknown JV partner, a raw material supply chain that doesn't yet exist in India, and capital not yet raised. Five to six competitors are reportedly entering the same NdFeB space. If China's export restrictions ease, the geopolitical urgency that creates the opportunity also disappears.
The verdict:
At ~₹830 per share and ₹800 crore market cap, the core business — alloys, relays, current sensing, and smart meters — can reasonably support a ₹1,000–1,250 crore valuation by FY29 purely on earnings, even if NdFeB never contributes a rupee. That is a 25–55% return from the base business alone. The Quantum NdFeB optionality sits on top of that for free. The correct framing is a fairly priced specialty industrial with a venture-stage option stapled to it — not a neodymium magnet startup trading at ₹800 crore. Size accordingly: 2–4% of a portfolio, held with 3–5 year patience.
