Official PIOMAS September 2025 data is delayed due to a US government shutdown. Latest projections estimate the minimum at around 3,897 km³, making it the 2nd lowest after 2012's 3,673 km³. The 2025 annual mean could still drop below 2017's record low of 12,800 km³, depending on October-December volumes.
So today is Sunday 13th of July, and #PIOMAS has yet to push the BIG RED button that actually publishes their own sea ice volume numbers for June 2025. It's not like they haven't been told before how utterly flaky and unreliable they are and have always been. #twiddling
@rhosking252 It's the right time for PIOMAS, compilers of sea ice volume data, to be twiddling their thumbs for a few days more following the close of June, before publishing this key climate data at about the 7th or 8th of July. Sometimes even 11th or 12th of the month.
