TUESDAY — LISTENING IS WHERE PATIENT SAFETY BEGINS. BUT IT CANNOT BE WHERE IT ENDS. Yesterday we said a patient should never have to earn the right to be heard. Today, let’s go one step further. When a patient reports that something changed after taking a medication, listening should lead to questions: What changed? When did it begin? What medication was taken? What was the patient like before? What happened after? Not dismissal. Not assumptions. Investigation. This is not anti-medicine. It is how medicine becomes better. And there are doctors, researchers, nurses, pharmacists and advocates who understand this—people willing to listen, document, investigate and learn. They deserve our recognition too. Because patient safety is not patients against medicine. It is patients AND medicine working together to discover the truth. For Henry.
