Thanks to @juliette_sch for arranging a fantastic #PLFWorkshop and to all the delegates joining in from around the World. Great talks from Mark Rutter
@HarperAdamsUni, Isabelle Veissier @INRAE_France, Emma Baxter @SRUC and @IanWerkheiser sparking lots of interesting discussion.
Congratulations on a great #PLFworkshop @juliette_sch & @AnimalWelfareRN, fantastic speakers, organisation and networking opportunities. Now reflecting on the critical end users of PLF tech, both the animals and the farmers & making sure their needs are met first #ethics #welfare
Really appreciated the chance to attend this #PLFworkshop today- such fantastic insights on a diverse range of topics! Thank you @AnimalWelfareRN and @juliette_sch #innovation #agritech #animalwelfare

#PLFworkshop today organised by @juliette_sch and the AWRN team was so interesting and very beneficial for my research! I've got lots of papers to look up and more questions than answers! The world of Precision Livestock Farming is complex. Thank you for organising this workshop
Huge thanks go to @juliette_sch, the Animal Welfare Research Network and all who helped organise the fantastic ‘Precision livestock farming technologies’ workshop today. It was so well thought out and thoroughly enjoyable. Lots to think about #PLFworkshop

Such an interesting talk by @IanWerkheiser on the ethical side of using PLF technology. Particularly hearing the damage PLF could do in terms of small scale farms, something I had not considered. #PLFworkshop

I also share his concerns about the impact automation and robotization may have on how we perceive animals, and may substantially reduce our contact with them. Does our duty of stewardship not warrant a duty of care and active engagement with the animals themselves? #PLFworkshop

I appreciate and share Ian' reflections on teleological approach to animal welfare. 1. A "natural" life does little to animal welfare (harsh climate and predators, more stress, competition, etc). Also, since (limited) stress is a part of life, maybe also desirable? #PLFworkshop
@IanWerkheiser addresses ethical challenges raised by PLS. A few issues have been identified in the breakout sessions, showing researchers are not just aware of technical difficulties but also possible ethical/social/AW challenges. #PLFworkshop

My favourite topic - animal affective state - being discussed at today's #PLFworkshop specifically in relation to recognising stress and negative emotions in pigs to allow earlier interventions by farmers @AnimalWelfareRN

Fantastic talk by @SRUC's Emma Baxter on using PLFs potential to measure positive emotional states in pigs! Loved this slide showing some work showing different tail postures and how these relate to the individuals emotional state #PLFworkshop

Very promising results using computer vision and machine learning to monitor facial expressions in pigs, but Emma brings our attention to a world of other possible indicators. An integrated approach is warranted, but also validation. #PLFworkshop

Emma Baxter kicks off the afternoon session. She starts by pointing out some potential negatives of PLS technology for welfare, e.g. when focus on efficiency and performance leads to the disregarding of best practice. Also, sensors may negatively impact animals. #PLFworkshop

Now we are listening to the #PLFworkshop with a young colleague at home. This is how #COVID19 changed our lives, to attend workshop with your kids 😅

That problem is made even worse when we start thinking about implementation. Given that many people don't think fish can feel any kind of physical pain, let alone stress, it's pretty hard to get political will behind regulation. #PLFworkshop
Really interesting conversation in the breakout group on aquaculture at #PLFworkshop. Using technology to improve welfare for fish highlights the difficulties in assessing welfare in non-human animals. What does emotional and psychological health look like in fish?
#PLFworkshop interesting talks on PLF. And to think I almost missed these talks. The multidimensional level testing is intriguing yet challenging from lay perspective.

I woke up at 3am to attend and present at this #PLFWorkshop, but so far it's been worth it! Time zone issues with remote conferences are real, but it's probably on balance still less tiring than being there with jet lag. We'll see if I fall asleep during my presentation or not.
Fascinating talk from Doctor Isabelle Veissier on the social networking of cows before and after mixing #PLFworkshop
