#PPCPolicy What Does It Mean to Be Canadian? Reclaiming Our National Identity A strong nation thrives when its people share a sense of belonging, common values, and a unified national vision. This shared identity creates the trust and understanding that allow societies and institutions to flourish. For decades, Canada successfully welcomed immigrants who integrated into our culture while bringing their unique heritage, enriching our society in the process. But things are changing—and not for the better. From Multiculturalism to Division In the past, immigrants became Canadian while adding their own distinct cultural flavors. This type of multiculturalism celebrated diversity while building unity. However, recent government policies have shifted toward promoting official multiculturalism, where newcomers are encouraged to maintain the values and cultures they left behind rather than adopting Canadian values and traditions. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken this even further, calling Canada a “post-national state” with no core identity. This ideology of extreme multiculturalism risks undermining the very foundation of what it means to be Canadian. What’s Wrong With This Approach? In a free society, immigrants absolutely have the right to honor and preserve their cultural heritage. But it shouldn’t be the government’s responsibility—or taxpayers’ burden—to fund programs designed to maintain these cultural identities. Instead, new Canadians should be encouraged to: •Learn about our history and culture. •Master one of our official languages. •Embrace widely shared Canadian values like freedom, equality, and democracy. When the focus shifts from integration to preservation of separate identities, it erodes the sense of community and belonging that holds a nation together. The Dangers of Losing a National Identity Without a shared identity, Canada risks becoming a fragmented society where different cultural groups exist in isolation rather than as part of a cohesive whole. This can lead to mistrust, weakened social bonds, and institutions that struggle to function effectively. A nation without a unifying identity isn’t a nation at all—it’s just a collection of disconnected communities. Reclaiming Our Identity Canadians have a right to expect immigrants to integrate into our society while maintaining the freedom to celebrate their heritage privately. Government policies should focus on fostering unity and pride in being Canadian, not on funding programs that divide us. Canada’s strength lies in its ability to blend diversity with a strong national identity.
