After some more back-and-forth action, Dan Henderson knocks out Wanderlei Silva in round 3 to end The Axe Murderer’s middleweight reign and become the 1st fighter to simultaneously hold 2 major belts in MMA’s modern era
One of my favorite all-time MMA fights and moments #PRIDE33
Round 2 of Wanderlei Silva vs. Dan Henderson 2 at #PRIDE33
Henderson utilizing solid clinch tactics in conjunction with strikes to plant Silva and put on a ground-and-pound clinic (with some hilarious commentary from Josh Barnett)
Round 1 of Wanderlei Silva vs. Dan Henderson 2 at #PRIDE33
It’s a bit of a slow burn that begins to catch fire toward the end with both men stunning the other
(Easter egg: you can see an excited Joe Silva and Lorenzo Fertitta in the audience enjoying themselves during replays)
Diaz vs. Gomi was a back-and-forth war with some clear dynamics at play and it ends with a fantastic gogoplata choke from Stockton’s finest.
The result officially reads as a “no contest” after Diaz tested positive for heroic doses of marijuana. #PRIDE33
#PRIDE33 also features the instant-classic between Nick Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi during Diaz’s 160-pound lightweight run…
Diaz closed as a near 3-1 underdog to Gomi.
#PRIDE33 also featured a 205 lbs. Alastair Overeem, who was attempting to avenge a loss against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
Overeem had some early success standing by countering kicks but Shogun’s pressure persisted and eventually got things to the floor…
Memorable post-fight speech
#PRIDE33 also featured one of my favorite fighters, Hayato “Mach” Sakurai, who knocked out future TUF winner, Mac Danzig.
People don’t talk enough about Sakurai IMO… I often sell him as the Japanese Jose Aldo of his time to newer fans whom I encourage to check out his catalog.
#PRIDE33 featured a ton of upsets but none bigger than Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou’s knockout over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
Before Francis Ngannou, Sokoudjou helped put Cameroon on the MMA map by coming through as a +1250 underdog in this fight.
One of MMA’s biggest upsets.
#PRIDE33 then features a welterweight fight (185 lbs.) that sees Frank Trigg earn a hard-fought decision win over Kazuo Misaki… immediately after this fight, Trigg would then jump over to color commentator duties just a couple of fights later.
#PRIDE33 opens with a lightweight showcase that features Jaochim “Hellboy” Hansen showing off his underrated jiu-jitsu skills opposite Jason Ireland:

Nick Diaz post-fight interview with Jerry Millen after upsetting Takanori Gomi at #PRIDE33
Nick Diaz defeats PRIDE lightweight champion Takanori Gomi. He walked through fire and shocked everybody with a flawless Gogoplata submission. KO artists have always had trouble with the Diaz boys. This was a perfect example of that. #PRIDE33
After getting knocked down and battered, Gomi couldn't put Nick away. Nick turned up the pressure and Gomi was feeling it. By the end of the first round, Nick knew he had him. At the start of the second, you see Nick say “come on, bitch” #PRIDE33
Nick Diaz and Takanori Gomi staredown. Nick was mean-mugging the Fireball Kid in his own house. #PRIDE33
Nick Diaz vs Takanori Gomi prefight package. Gomi was a monster at this time. Fan fantasy matchups pitted him against active UFC champions. Then along came Nick Diaz... #PRIDE33
