While doing some research online I came across a forum where British men go to discuss having unprotected sex with prostitutes. The site is beyond disgusting, and even a quick glance shows that the johns are fully aware that they are essentially paying to rape these unfortunate women. These men know that in many cases they are raping victims of sex traffickers, but they think that paying a pimp a few quid gives them the moral right to do whatever they like to these women and girls. There are conversations about prostitutes who are obviously unwilling, who clearly hate what they’re doing — and those conversations make it clear that the unwillingness is a big part of the appeal. There are conversations about prostitutes who look underage. Again, this is cited as a bonus rather than as a cause for concern. There are also conversations about which prostitutes can be physically abused: which can be hit, which can be whipped, which can be choked unconscious, etc. The only limiting factor is the reaction of the various pimps: the feelings of the women and girls involved don’t even rate a mention. This website is one of the most disturbing things I’ve encountered online. These men discuss the women they abuse in terms I’d not use for animals. They degrade them in person, then log on and degrade them online, sharing details about their bodies and performances with absolutely no consideration for the fact that these women are human beings. The complete disregard for the concept of consent would be shocking if I hadn’t already been familiar with the type of filthy pervert who pays for sex. These men enjoy forcing prostitutes to do things they hate; they get off on humiliating and abusing them, and on forcing them to have unprotected sex. Then they brag about going home and having unprotected sex with their wives and girlfriends. The men on this website are rapists at heart, like every john, and I only wish that I could expose them to their friends and families.

Men who hire sex workers are absolute scum. You have no idea when you pay a sex worker whether or not she has been trafficked. You have no idea if she is working consensually or if she is having sex with you because the alternative is to be beaten or denied the narcotics to which she has been forcibly addicted. Furthermore, even if a woman has not been trafficked, having sex with someone who is only doing it out of financial desperation is disgusting.

I walked through the red light district in Brussels today and it was one of the most horrible things I’ve ever seen. Young women standing behind glass while groups of men banged on the windows and haggled over them like products. Most of the women appeared to be Asian or Eastern European. The men crowding around them were overwhelmingly African or Muslim men, many still dressed in Islamic clothes. Anyone who looks at that and sees “empowerment” is sick in the head. I don’t know the circumstances of every woman there, but it was impossible to witness it and not wonder how many were there through coercion, desperation, trafficking, or poverty. Nothing about it looked liberating. Putting it lightly it was dehumanising. The women treated like livestock by the most depraved men I’d ever seen. This is Brussels. The capital of the European Union. The place where leaders gather, policies are written, and grand speeches about progress are made. Yet just outside the conference halls and beneath the glass towers, this is happening in plain sight. I only hope Ireland never comes to resemble it.

I have been pushing back against the term "sex work" for well over a decade now, and am decidedly grossed out at seeing it completely mainstreamed.
