I was reading about exploding wires and ended up finding some really cool papers on explosions by plasma expansion inside fuses. When a big fault current hits a fuse, the narrow spots on the metal strip heat up so fast that the metal doesn’t just melt….it vaporizes and turns into plasma! The plasma then expands really hard and blasts material outward. You can’t really see any of it with normal cameras though, so it’s probably a somewhat dangerous experiment not worthwhile for me to try at home, ha. Apparently, you need X-ray imaging to even catch it. I did find these pictures though that show the metal strip ballooning out in just a few hundred nanoseconds.
