This action is tantamount to direct interference in the judicial affairs of an independent nation. President Trump himself has already pardoned several of his supporters who were convicted of serious crimes, including individuals who attacked the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021, during the counting of Electoral Votes. In that incident, police officers were killed, and members of Congress, including the Vice President, had to take refuge in the basement. During his previous term, President Trump also pardoned Jared Kushner's Father, Charles Kushner, who had been sentenced to prison and heavy fines for tax fraud, illegal campaign contributions, and witness tampering. Mr. Kushner now serves as the US Ambassador to France. Former President Joe Biden also pardoned his son Hunter Biden just weeks before the end of his presidential term. Hunter Biden faced court proceedings for illegal weapons possession and tax-related cases. And now in Pakistan, an extremely significant step is currently being proposed. Through the 27th Constitutional Amendment, there is a proposal to make the President's immunity lifetime—meaning even after leaving office, they would retain immunity from legal accountability. This tradition of immunity and presidential pardons is utterly unjust and contrary to the principle of rule of law. It is an action that conflicts with the spirit of democracy and established norms of human equality. Coincidentally, these days world leaders are discussing environmental issues at the COP climate conference in Brazil. This occasion also serves as an apt reminder that judicial pollution is no less dangerous to the system of human justice than environmental pollution. When the powerful begin to consider themselves above the law, the state becomes weak and justice becomes meaningless.
