Day R for #ParasiteABC - time to showcase a spiny-headed worm (Acanthocephalan) - Rhadinorhynchus gerberi, a species we described in 2019 from the intestine of the Largespotted dart, Trachinotus botla, caught on the North East coast of South Africa. Research was led by @OKudlai
Day Q for #ParasiteABC - not an easy letter, luckily our @NWU_WRG PhD student @TruterMarliese helped me here by discovering Quadriacanthus allobychoskiella, a monogenean (previously only known from Egypt, Uganda and 1 site in SA) on catfish from the Zambezi, Orange & Vaal Rivers.
Day P for #ParasiteABC - Plasmodium, however not human malaria, but Plasmodium intabazwe, a sp of lizard malaria we describe from the South African endemic crag lizard. The species name is the Zulu for ‘flat mountain’, the type locality in the eastern Free State, South Africa.
Day O for #ParasiteABC must be reserved for an oddball and no other qualifies more than Oculotrema hippopotami. This ectoparasitic flatworm (monogenean) do not live on fish, as most monogeneans do, but as its name applies, under the eyelids of African hippos! 📸- @NWU_AACRG

Many parasites have been named for brilliant parasitologist. For Day M of #ParasiteABC my choice is the #FishParasiticIsopods Mothocya bertlucy we named in honour of Bert Williams and Lucy Bunkley-Williams in recognition of their huge contribution to marine parasitology.
Day L for #ParasiteABC- Lobothorax nicosmiti - for obvious reasons this fish parasitic isopod is special for me! Very honored that my colleagues @anee3716 & Niel Bruce et al named this species for me in 2021. L. nicosmiti lives in the mouths of snake mackerel 📸 @anee3716
Day K for #ParasiteABC - Kudoa thyrsites a myxo globally found in marine fishes. It cause post-mortem softening of muscle making host fish unmarketable. Originally described from South Africa and locally known as "pap snoek" snoek = type host Thyrsites atun 📸 Levsen et al. 2008
Day J for #ParasiteABC and I can introduce you to a little know fish parasitic isopod, Joryma malabaricus described by our colleague @anee3716 et al. There are only 6 known species of Joryma and they live mainly in the gill chamber of sardines. 📸 by @anee3716

Day E of #ParasiteABC, back to #FishParasiticIsopods. Meet Elthusa acutinasa, a gill isopod we described in 2019. This one is very special to me as my son (10years) proposed the name and then helped me to construct it from Latin: acute - point; nasus - nose = pointy nose isopod!
Day D of #ParasiteABC have to be Diplozoon. This genus of monogenean worms are fascinating in looks and lifestyle. Living on fish gills larvae only mature when 2 fuse permanently to form a X or H shape organism. Who though monogamy in parasites! 📷 - Prof Wilmien Luus-Powell
Day C of #ParasiteABC - many options for someone who research #FishParasiticIsopods! This include the buccal isopods of Ceratothoa commonly known as tongue biters or tongue replacement isopods. Here one of our South African species, Ceratothoa africanae, we described in 2014.
Day B for #ParasiteABC - Especially proud of this one, Bambalocra intwala new genus & species of fish parasitic isopod from South Africa we described in 2019. Both genus & species names from our indigenous isiZulu language. Bamba meaning ‘to grip’, and intwala = louse.
Let Day A for #ParasiteABC continue! Here an Anilocra sp. from South Africa on a Two-tone fingerfin. Anilocra is the largest fish parasitic isopod genus (in numbers and size) and Anilocra capensis was the first ever fish parasite described from South Africa. #TeamParasite
