A joint operation by #EskomGauteng, @SAPoliceService Ga-Rankuwa, Public Order Policing (POPS), @TMPDSafety and @CityTshwane Water and Sanitation was held on Tuesday, 21 October 2025 in Ga-Rankuwa Industrial to clamp down on illegal connections as part of Eskom’s ongoing efforts to prevent the disruption of power supply to legitimate customers. A substantial volume of illegal cables was successfully removed.
The removal of illegal connections is necessary as these lead to equipment failures, put additional pressure on the electricity network causing overloading resulting in frequent outages. Furthermore, it impacts the utility's operations and finances, and pose a danger to the community, especially to children and animals.
We urge community members to report any unauthorised person who operates on our equipment or suspected to be conducting electricity related illegal activities such as theft, vandalism, meter bypassing and illegal connections to the Eskom Crime Line No 0800 11 27 22 or WhatsApp 081 333 3323.

Eskom notes with concern that out of more than 3 500 registered customers in the area, only 697 are actively purchasing electricity.
Furthermore, unauthorized connections, established without appropriate applications or notifications, have put additional pressure on the network, causing overloading resulting in daily outages, which have triggered community protests.

Be smart! If someone approaches you with an offer to modify your electricity meter and demands payment, be aware that it's against the law. Engaging in an illegal connection can lead to disconnection and make you accountable for a penalty. Instead, choose to #PayAndBeLegal.
