Many people watched @elonmusk's presentation of the #Optimus robots by @Tesla, and some of those not physically present at the event felt deceived when they realized the #robots were #remotely #piloted rather than fully #AI #autonomous. I want to address this perception because it doesn’t diminish the achievements of these robots. In fact, people are overlooking the true, #immediate #opportunities that this technology can bring.
The current focus on fully autonomous humanoid robots may overshadow the #immense #potential of remotely operated robots, particularly in terms of #dexterity. While full autonomy might still be some time away, improving the dexterity of these robots offers immediate value. Tasks requiring fine motor skills, like #household repairs, computer #installations, or even #cooking, can be performed remotely, enabling #skilled workers to operate efficiently from anywhere.
In cities like Los Angeles, Toronto, and New York, where traffic and logistical challenges often make it difficult to deliver services efficiently, remote robots could completely change the game. In dense urban areas like condos, accessing homes or finding parking can be time-consuming and costly, making it impractical for service professionals to attend to small jobs. This is why, in many large cities, there are vast underserved segments of the market where people simply can’t afford services due to the high cost of living and the economics of hiring professionals for short tasks.
Imagine a world where a technician or service provider could remotely fix issues, handle maintenance, or even provide daily services like babysitting without ever leaving their home. By removing the need to physically travel, service providers could handle multiple jobs a day and offer more affordable rates, creating a marketplace that better serves urban dwellers. This also opens the door for individuals with day jobs to take on extra work in their spare time—offering services like computer repairs, meal preparation, or even home maintenance—using remotely operated robots.
Now, imagine the impact this could have on healthcare and elderly care. Currently, only the wealthiest can afford a nurse to be present around the clock, and visiting nurses operate on a schedule, not necessarily when they’re needed most. With remote-operated robots, healthcare professionals could be on standby for elderly individuals living at home. If someone falls or an alarm goes off, a nurse or doctor could instantly dial into the robot and provide immediate assistance. This quick response could save lives, offering care within seconds instead of waiting 10-15 minutes for emergency services to arrive. And in some cases, the doctor might even be able to resolve the issue remotely without needing to dispatch an emergency team, leading to huge cost savings.
Further, we could use this technology to balance healthcare demands globally. Hospitals are often overloaded with patients while other regions may have fewer needs at certain times. Imagine a system where doctors from one region could dial into robots in another region during their off-hours to help areas with high demand. For instance, a doctor in LA could assist patients in New York during the evening when their workload is lighter. This kind of flexibility would allow us to pool resources and efficiently distribute healthcare services, ensuring better global coverage.
All of this points to the creation of a new marketplace for robot-aided services, which I foresee could become a trillion-dollar industry. This will fundamentally transform how we access services, manage healthcare, and perform everyday tasks, providing solutions to many logistical and economic challenges. By pushing the limits of robotic dexterity, we could create a tool that dramatically boosts efficiency across multiple industries. Even before full autonomy arrives, these robots have the potential to become a highly valuable, globally transformative product.
