@PembsCoast And its (alas) extinct relative the #Great #Auk was the inspiration for the name penguin anyway #Pinguinus #impennis 🐧 so very appropriate!

@Protohedgehog Lets confuse matters even more by introducing #greatauk, the original, but sadly extinct, North Atlantic #Pinguinus into the equation. Now, what would you call Antarctica?

Fascinating talk by Julia Best on the history of the Great Auk. This species laid only one egg a year, and once taken by predators, it could not lay another one, leaving it very vulnerable to population decline #bwgsheff #birdnerds #pinguinus
