Just a few miles from Fort Henry, this is the trackbed of a narrow gauge railway called Pike’s Tramway across Stoborough Heath.
It once carried clay to a quay on the River Frome for shipment via Poole Harbour for use in products including Wedgwood tableware.

Fort Henry is perched above the sandy beaches at Studland Bay in Dorset.
Allied leaders - including Sir Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower and King George VI - observed live-fire landing exercises from here before the 1944 D-Day landings in Normandy.

Twenty four townsmen and Tonbridge School old boys lost their lives in the Boer War (1899-1902).
They are commemorated by the town’s oldest war memorial.
Pip’s posts often featured local history, which is why took this pic on 5 August.

This part of my town, ‘The Pantiles’, is named after paving laid here in 1699.
They used Wealden clay tiles shaped in wooden pans before firing. Princess, later Queen, Anne paid for these ‘pan tiles’.
They were replaced with ceramic paving in 1792.

People often ask why this part of my town is called The Pantiles.
In 1700, this Upper Walk was paved with Wealden clay tiles shaped in a wooden pan before firing. Hence the name!
These were replaced with stone in 1793, but @ThePantiles name is still used.

The life-sized effigy by Eric Kennington was originally intended for St Paul’s Cathedral, London.
However, it wasn’t accepted there or at Westminster Abbey or Salisbury Cathedral.
Appropriately, perhaps, that’s how it found a home at beautiful St Martin’s Church.

Over the years, the church had fallen into disuse, but was being restored in the early 20th century. T.E. Lawrence funded some of the work.
St Martin’s was rededicated in 1936, the year after Lawrence’s death in a motorcycle accident.

Better known as Lawrence of Arabia, he lived quietly at Clouds Hill, a cottage at Bovington, from 1923 to 1935.
Lawrence, a keen historian, took special interest in St Martin’s, said to have been founded in the seventh century and rebuilt in about 1030.

St Martin’s is probably the most complete Saxon church in Dorset.
Inside, you’ll find 12th-century frescoes and red stars, possibly marking 17th century plague deaths.
But we stopped by to see a more modern addition: a beautiful effigy of T.E. Lawrence.
