“The Martello towers on the Plains of Abraham were built between 1808 and 1812 specifically to guard Quebec City against a possible American invasion during the War of 1812. The British feared the U.S. would try to annex Canada, so Governor Craig ordered four of these round stone towers across the promontory, with two—Tower 1 and Tower 2—right on the Plains.
They acted as the city’s first line of defense, positioned about half a mile out from the main walls. Each had thick masonry walls, loopholes for rifles, and a flat roof mounting cannons—three to five guns per tower—that could sweep the open fields with interlocking fire. A small garrison of 12 to 20 men could hold out for weeks with stored supplies and powder.
They never saw combat; the Americans never reached Quebec. Today, Towers 1 and 2 are still there as historic sites you can visit.”
