#PlotPicks 2) Pearl. I don’t think anyone could top the work Mia Goth did in 2022. The surprise prequel to X, director Ti West brings a gruesome tale of desire and lust to the screen set in Spanish Flu ridden 1918. Goth’s monologue in the third act is legendary. #Oscar4MiaGoth

#PlotPicks 3) Nope. Jordan Peele has gone 3 for 3 in feature films, and this sci-fi/horror absolutely delivers. All the stuff with Gordy’s Home is just bone chilling and brilliant. Oozing in subtext and loaded with humor, Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer absolutely crush in this.

#PlotPicks 4) Top Gun: Maverick. Legacy sequels generally leave a sour taste in my mouth, but Tom Cruise never fails. Capturing the spirit of the original, but with the most incredible cinematography, it was badass. A future classic, the stellar cast hold their own alongside TC.

Tonight’s #PlotPicks is George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Chances are I’ll make it a double feature and watch @edgarwright’s Shaun of the Dead because why not start October with zombies?
Starting tomorrow #PlotPicks returns with something I like to call #AroundTheWorldin8Days. I’ll be watching a film from another country every night for the next 8 days starting in France with The City of Lost Children.
#PlotPicks 1) The Thing. John Carpenter’s seminal classic is my favorite movie ever. The paranoia, the Morricone score, and the practical effects, MY GOD. Everything about it is just so good and I can watch it multiple times a year, easily. And shout out to Kurt Russell’s beard.

#PlotPicks 3) Lost in Translation. A beautiful film about love, self discovery, and disconnection from a world that’s constantly connected. Over the course of Bill Murray’s legendary career, this is his masterclass in acting. I’m always full of heartbreak and love after watching.

#PlotPicks 5) Heat. I feel like I’ve talked at nauseam about this movie. A simple cat and mouse, cops and robbers movie that is perfect on every level. It boasts the best director’s commentary of all time. The action sequences are tense as is the diner sit down. You know the one.

#PlotPicks 6) Young Frankenstein. To me, this is a perfect comedy. Everyone has their favorite Mel Brooks movie and this one is easily mine. Full of gags and one liners, it’s silly with a dash of vulgarity, all while telling a great Frankenstein story. I’m sorry FRONK EN STEEN.

#PlotPicks 7) No Country for Old Men. I saw this film four times in the theater. The three leads all with their own personal brand of morality are fantastic. Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh is one of the best characters of the past 30 years. A Coen Bros experience all its own.

#PlotPicks 8) Batman. 1989’s Batman is my favorite superhero film of all time, which is why it’s the only one on my list. It manages to blend comic book aesthetic with real world grit, in a way only Tim Burton can do. Jack Nicholson’s Joker is superb and Michael Keaton IS Batman.

#PlotPicks 11) The Shining. Only Kubrick can make an absolute classic that the author of the source material absolutely hates. Jack Nicholson is terrifying as hell and Shelley Duvall is terrified as hell and the tension just lingers. The music and cinematography are legendary.

#PlotPicks 13) Ocean’s Eleven. This is the best heist movie ever made. Fight me. The perfect ensemble cast play off one another immaculately as Soderbergh brings us a quick witted caper for the ages. The music is also just so good and this movie is just freakin cool. 11/10 Stars.

#PlotPicks 14) The Great Mouse Detective. This is my favorite animated movie of all time. It is half the reason I got a Disney+ account. A classic detective tale, this movie offers laughs and gasps throughout. The incomparable Vincent Price voices our villain, Professor Ratigan.

#PlotPicks 15) Mad Max: Fury Road. There was a 30 year gap in the releases of Beyond Thunderdome and Fury Road. Boy was this movie worth the wait. High octane, explosive action mixed with a fantastic narrative, and it’s all anchored by its leads; in particular Charlize Theron.

#PlotPicks 16) Jaws. This is Spielberg’s best movie. It’s not a discussion. An island town being haunted by a Great White Shark and three unlikely companions trying to catch it and kill it. At this point, who hasn’t seen Jaws? This movie also provides one of the best scores ever.

#PlotPicks 17) Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. Wacky. Silly. Zany. FUN. That’s the only way to describe this movie of a “man” and his bike. There’s just so many memorable scenes, from ‘Tequila’ at the bar to Large Marge to remembering the Alamo. We all need this kind of fun in our life.

#PlotPicks 18) Raiders of the Lost Ark. Any movie that involves Nazis getting their faces melted, is a terrific movie. Add in the coolest man to ever don a fedora, a great soundtrack, and that fun action/adventure charm, it’s hard not to love this movie. Never gets old either.

#PlotPicks 19) The French Connection. Gene Hackman’s Popeye Doyle is one of my favorite characters ever. The tenacity and intensity he plays this drug cop helped him win an Oscar. Director William Friedkin, who also won an Oscar for this movie, gives us the best chase scene ever.

#PlotPicks 21) Face/Off. This is one of the most ridiculous concepts of all time pulled off to perfection John Travolta is Nicolas Cage. Nicolas Cage is John Travolta. Add signature John Woo style. How can you not love any of that? Silly and action packed, it just speaks to me.
