Nuclear weapons are vital for the survival of a country like India- with no treaty allies, flanked by hostile, collusive N-weapon states. China’s nuclear bomb test in 1964 accelerated India’s bomb prog. Post 1974 #Pokhran1 test, the prog went into cold storage until a jump-start in 1989. A trigger was Pak’s China-supplied N-bomb in 1982 (proxy tested in 1990). Our first deliverable N-weapons were tested in 1998 #Pokhran2. A triumvirate of scientists - Homi Bhabha, Raja Ramanna and Rajagopala Chidambaram steered the top-secret project in various phases. #IndiraGandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, played a key role in the #Pokhran1 #nucleartest. She authorized the test on September 7, 1972, and oversaw the preparations leading up to it. The test was conducted on May 18, 1974, at the #Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan.

#Pokhran2 wouldn't have been required had Nehru carried out the test, which we were capable of even at that time. #Pokhran2 wouldn't have been required had Indira Gandhi gone ahead and built the bomb after #Pokhran1. Thank You Atal ji for testing AND building the bomb!!!
