Since we had incredible views of humpbacks this afternoon, and slowing our speed for a viewing would almost certainly mean a delayed start to the next morning’s operation, I decide not to change course and to let guests continue with their dinner undisturbed.

While not our Plan A or B, we’re treated to groups of Adélie penguins encouraging each other to plunge into the icy water, lazing fur seals on low-lying rocks between the larger islands, curious leopard seals gliding by, and feeding humpbacks. Plan C delivers!

We arrive at our anchorage and thankfully the wind has dropped to 5 knots so we'll be able to kayak this afternoon. The kayak guide calls the kayakers for a meeting. 20 plan to paddle. I update the guests & let them know the first group will be called in 30 mins. #polarguideweek

By 9:45 disembarkation is complete with half the guests on shore & half out in the bay. In 30 mins, they'll switch. On shore, everything runs smoothly with the Assistant Expedition Leader assisting me in catching the boats & briefing guests at the landing site #polarguideweek
The exped. team is in the mud room, dressed with safety bags with emergency equipment. We're ready. Half will be driving boat explorations & half will join me to run the landing. We have a meeting on wind conditions which are set to increase through the morning. #polarguideweek
