6 UNCOMFORTABLE SETS OF FACTS IN THE MINNEAPOLIS ICE SHOOTING If you need a simple answer, this case will disappoint you. #MinneapolisShooting #ICEEnforcement #PoliceAccountabilityAs a recently retired POLICE OFFICER myself, and one who supports the enforcement of immigration law, let me remind us that . . . 1. ICE has not been operating by best practices. ICE failed to either coordinate with local police or bring sufficient resources of their own for crowd control. ICE inappropriately lowered the bar for what courts have long held as the legally required "reasonable suspicion" for detaining subjects in civil enforcement proceedings. And ICE has failed to live up to President Trump's promise of prioritizing the deportation of the worst criminals. 2. The officer who fired yesterday had no business standing in front of the car, keeping it real, though at this point it is difficult to determine what his options were in the moments before the car was put into forward gear. 3. ICE is good at some things, but it is not an appropriate agency — by either mandate or training — to be put in the position of crowd control, and it shows. As a LIBERTARIAN who tolerates no compromise to our government's singular paramount obligation to protect our individual rights, let me remind us that according to reports... 4. The fatal round fired by the officer yesterday went through the front windshield, not through the car's side window, the car was traveling toward him, and the orientation of the turned front wheels was not in his field of vision. 5. The officer's gun was already drawn and pointed because his colleague was in the process of taking the driver into custody, when she chose to disregard both verbal commands and an officer's contact with the driver-side door, and put the car in reverse and then into forward gear. 6. We should not be suggesting that officers' honest errors, or even not being good at their jobs, in the absence of criminal intent, should incur criminal liability. This is not to offer an excuse, merely to remind us that a criminal court may be an unlikely venue in which to achieve a satisfactory resolution to this case. POLITICIANS who are trying to convince you either that the driver had criminal intent to weaponize her car or that the officer who fired had criminal intent and could not have had reasonable fear, MAY HAVE A GREATER INTEREST IN PITTING AMERICAN AGAINST AMERICAN THAN IN ADVANCING OUR COMMUNITIES.
