Common #sorrel #Rumex #acetosa (#Polygonoideae) is a plant commonly found in #Berlin #meadows. It can be harmful to #agriculture but is also important for humans as a #food and #medicinal plant. Aspects of its basic biology and ecology are presented here, including information on sorrel as a #hostplant for different partly parasitic organisms (for example, for the #dockbug #Coreus #marginatus). Scientific findings on the structure of #sexchromosomes will also be briefly introduced. Common sorrel is native to Europe, Asia, North Africa and Australia. Its presence in North and South America is due to human introduction, which is why the species must be named a #neophyte there. The plant species prefers semi-arid to moderately moist habitats that should not be too nutrient- or phosphorus-rich. It thrives on #soils, preferring loamy soils, with acidic pH value. Common sorrel can reproduce vegetatively if necessary, especially in the case of a root shoot injury. The sexually produced #seeds are #airborne, which is why wind dispersal is the predominant method of #dispersal for this #plant #species. Since common sorrel tolerates manure well and can therefore thrive in manure-fertilized fields, there is a risk that it will displace crops cultivated in the #fields. On the other hand, common sorrel is a tasty food for us humans, and as such, it also has a long historical background. Sorrel can be used as a salad or vegetable, as well as to refine dishes. But what ingredients does this plant actually contain, how healthy and nutritious is it, and to what extent can it be used in natural medicine? The authors H. Korpelainen & M. Pietiläinen (2020) examined common sorrel as a #food and #medicinal product. They point out that consuming its leaves provides both #micronutrients and #macronutrients. The plant, which has been harvested from the wild since ancient times for its medicinal properties and nutritional value and cultivated for centuries, contains numerous #bioactive substances. However, the authors emphasize that the plant has a high concentration of #oxalicacid, which impairs the bioavailability of some minerals such as calcium if raw, unheated plant material is used for food. Like all multicellular plants, the common sorrel is a #habitat for numerous organisms. Lepidoptera #caterpillars can have damaging effects, for example, those of the genus #Lycaena (Lycaenidae), including the purple-shot copper (L. alciphron). The dock bug Coreus marginatus (#Coreidae, #Heteroptera), although found as adults sucking on various plants, prefers to lay eggs on #dock species and other #Polygonaceae. In Berlin, the adults are often found on the common sorrel especially in July, where they have previously developed through five nymphal stages. The bug and its nymphs suck on the leaves. My photo series shows nymphal individuals of this species in the #urban #park Rehberge in Berlin. Other plant parasites on sorrel include, for example, rust fungi (Pucciniales, Basidiomycota). Among #dioecious plant species, including sorrel, where plants are characterized by the distribution of sex organs among different plant individuals, the presence of sex chromosomes is rather rare. They occur, for example, in papaya, Cannabis and plants of the genus Silene. And also, for example, in the common sorrel. According to the authors W. Jesionek et al. (2021), the plant possesses XY1Y2 sex determination. The authors found that the #Ychromosome can #increase in size with the help of non-long terminal repeat (#LTR) and LTR retrotransposons.
