On the other hand, this was not Napoleon’s first experience of pope kidnapping. The seizure of papal property in #France took place in 1789, immediately after the #FrenchRevolution. The previous #PopePius VI described this as an attack against the Church and condemned this action. He called for co-operation against the revolution. By 1796, French troops under Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Italy. On 10 February, Rome was entered and the Roman Republic was proclaimed. #Bonaparte asked the Pope to renounce papal supramacy. When Pius VI refused, he was arrested and then kidnapped. He was taken to Siena on 20 February and from there to Certosa, near Florence. Subsequently, he was transferred to the castle of Valence in France, where he died six weeks later. From this point of view, Pope Pius VII was much more fortunate than his predecessor.

In 2015 and 2016, I wrote OpEds in the LA Times, WaPo and NYT calling on @Pontifex to unseal the Church’s secret wartime files on #PopePius and the Vatican Bank. Some of that archive was opened in 2020. Historians at last are revealing some of the new info uncovered there.

WTF is with this "news" about #PopePius knowing about Jews being killed? We knew this. The Vatican was essentially occupied by the Axis Powers. The Pope did what he could while not risking the lives of millions of Catholics across Europe. He worked with the German Resistance.
