Attention South Carolina: Y’all are the nicest people I’ve met in a looong time. I am at Myrtle Beach with my elderly dad on vacation and I have lost count of how many people here have GONE OUT OF THEIR WAY to assist me with him. Just tonight at dinner, a man saw us walking toward the door. He stopped eating, left his hot meal on the table, and jumped up and raced ahead of us to open the door as my dad made his way up the ramp at a truly glacial pace. Such kindness. Such patience. Every day at the beach the same wonderful couple turns up out of nowhere to help us pack up and get across the dunes and back to the hotel. Today they weren’t out there, BUT THEN around 5:00, the husband turned up and said he just wanted to check on us and see if we needed any help getting back to the hotel. To be clear, he and his wife didn’t even come to the beach today. But he came to find us and make sure we were OK. Who does that??? Every single time I take my dad wading in the surf, people stop to offer help. My dad is very wobbly and he always looks like he’s going to fall down out there even in ankle deep water so I’m sure it’s alarming to watch him. But still, this does not happen anywhere else I go with him. Especially not in our hometown in central Virginia. After all I’ve experienced in the last several years, I was honestly beginning to lose my faith in humanity. This week, the good people of South Carolina have gone a long way toward restoring some of that. THANK YOU ♥️
