Thoughts and insights from a morning of coffee, waffles, and AGI / ethics talk with the one and only Scott Aaronson this morning in Austin.
1. (this fucking shocked me) Alignment researchers at big labs don't ask about WHAT they're aligning AGI for.
I basically said "You think about where AGI could take life itself, and what should be our role vs the role of vast posthuman life in the universe. Who did you talk about these things with in the OpenAI superalignment team?"
I swear to god he says "to be honest we really didn't think about that kind of moral stuff."
I reply: "brotherman... they're spending all day aligning. But to what end? To ensure an eternal hominid kingdom? To ensure a proliferation of potentia and conscious life beyond the stars? How can you align without an end goal?"
10 minutes more of talking resulted in the conclusion that, indeed, the "to what end?" question literally doesn't come up.
My supposition is because it is fundamentally taken for granted that AGI is to be forever a tool for humanity (and not a moral patient, or future valuable form of life) - and anyone with more cosmic views probably keeps it to themselves.
2. Scientific research in questionable place.
Scott mused a lot about whether the NSF, or NIST or other similar initiatives will exist in the current form in the next 3 years or so - and he thinks this'll lead more academics to find new sources of funding, or maybe find for-profit ways to work on AGI alignment.
It'll be interesting to see if this plays out / how.
3. Who is worth talking to regarding far-out AGI futures:
I asked: "So, you have this very not-speciesist take around moral value - that it isn't just opposable thumbs and DNA but is other 'stuff' that we should understand thoroughly if we are to build AGI. SO very people ask those kinds of questions - who else thinks about those kinds of scenarios?"
Scott said that he spends an inordinate amount of time reading @TheZvi (which is about the greatest compliment he could give, tbh), and that he's a guy worth talking about. I let him know I think Zvi once disagreed firmly with one of my cosmic alignment tweets in his newsletter and Scott was like "all the more reason to find the crux and talk to him."
"Have you talked to @robinhanson?" lol yes Scott, definitely. Many a time over the last 11 years.
@DKokotajlo67142 came up (who apparently was just in Austin, shucks, I missed him) and @Liv_Boeree.
^ VERY oddly, he didn't mention anyone from the big labs who would be good to talk to about more "cosmic" moral concerns other than a quick mention of @janleike, who he respects.
Looks like I need to sign up for Zvi's newsletter, and read Liv's writing (I've only seen some of her interviews) on alignment... and see if Jan has anything long-form on posthuman life / moral value.

All in all a fun talk - and I hope to have Scott on again in the coming year for another Trajectory episode.
