A blank card and a pen.
Two simple, old-school items.
Yet when a person takes time to personally write a note of gratitude, something powerful happens:
Two smiles are created in the #GameOfLife.
The #PowerOfHumanConnection.
Once again, 1,000s of high school student athletes were reminded about the importance of the little things — and the impact they have both on and off the field.
Before or after their games, every student-athlete took time to write a handwritten note of #gratitude to someone who impacted their life.
The following week, they personally delivered those cards. Because no matter who we are or where we go in life, none of us get there alone.
Someone helped us.
And sometimes all it takes is a selfless second to say “thank you.”
Sports provide opportunities to educate, connect and inspire young people.
Eventually, every game, season and career comes to an end. The opportunity to make a difference in the life of another person never does.

Today - yet again - I am so proud of countless student athletes and those coaches leading them in a #selfless manner.
The #PowerOfHumanConnection is just as important to physical and mental health as exercise and healthy eating. Studies have shown that social connections are associated with lower rates of depression, anxiety and stress.
And if you know what anxiety and stress are the two leading causes of, it’s another reason why human connection is so important.
Today in #Chicago, #Miami, #Dallas and #SouthBend, high school student athletes across different sports were out visiting senior citizens in honor of #NationalSeniorCitizenDay.
Every community has seniors, many of whom are battling loneliness or lost. They love the energy of when young people come to visit.
In Miami, an 85-year-old man thanked the student athletes before heading back to his room, noting that his wife had passed and he missed her. It brought two female student athletes to tears when they were leaving, because they were happy they brought him joy…but they also felt his pain.
In Chicago, a community coordinator at a local senior center was beyond thankful student athletes and coaches showed up, noting that seniors are looking for people to talk to and do things with.
In Dallas, a girls basketball program watched a 72-year-old former basketball player spin a basketball on her finger to their complete amazement.
In South Bend, student athletes cooked for seniors and realized how a good meal and conversation can truly make the heart full.
In most locations, competing schools teamed up together - off the courts, fields and courses - to bring smiles to the faces of seniors, many of whom have helped that local community grow.
It’s a great example of competitors on the field being true teammates off the field in the #GameOfLife.
There’s nothing better than helping someone else, because not only does it help them - but it helps the giver, too, because of the good feelings they receive in return.
That’s a true win-win for student athletes, families, schools and communities.
