Day6 of #PracticalHedge is about tying all this together
Establishing
Trimming
Non-intervention
Rejuvenation
These can be put into a cycle that helps us manage the hedges we have, & the brilliant Nigel Adams did just that!

Day5 of #PracticalHedge (finally - sorry)
After a period of leaving your hedge to do nothing, which could be 5 years, 10, 15, you will have noticed some big changes. It'll have filled out, grown up&out. It will have been full of birds
But you can't leave it forever, it will die
Day4 of #PracticalHedge is easy. After it's trimming phase, maybe when it's starting to show signs of wear & tear:
Just leave it!
We call this a "non intervention phase" but it's really just leaving it alone
This allows the plants to recover, billow, &be AMAZING for wildlife

Day3 of #PracticalHedge (a bit late...) is hedge trimming!
I often get told that flails are evil, & hedges should just be layed instead. This falsely puts these as either/or options when actually they can work rather nicely together

Day2 of #PracticalHedge for #NationalHedgerowWeek is about establishing a good hedge
There is plenty of information about planting, (about 5 whips/m, in a staggered double row etc) so I won't bother with details on this - but what then? What do we do when they are in the ground?

Day1 for #PracticalHedge is planning your hedge.
There is lots of appetite for planting new hedges, for climate, wildlife, woodfuel, soils, shelter, shade, pollinators, livestock control etc etc, you get the point
BUT there are things to think about before jumping into planting
#NationalHedgerowWeek is back! I can unashamedly chat hedge all week :)
The poll was close enough that I think I will just try to talk about everything hedge
So here goes - a #PracticalHedge thread 🧵
I'll talk about each stage of a hedge lifecycle
