The last year of my grassland bird growth research (project #PrairieBabies) the site was hit by a nasty drought that changed bird behavior, predator dynamics, local ecology
Emma worked so hard to build those observations into a multi-year paper, so excited it’s accepted!
I can finally say that the first paper I've ever worked on was just accepted for publication in Ecosphere!
It's not up yet, but keep an eye out for "Consequences of drought for grassland songbird reproduction" by me, @skwinnicki, @wayfaringwilly, @katy_silbird, and @birdfiddler!

I love Dickcissels, the cardinal-like bird I studied for my MSc #PrairieBabies work
They’re fun (colorful, spunky) but I gotta admit part of the appeal was their official four-letter code DICK, the namesake of my datasheets
More animals should have mildly inappropriate names
In undergrad I researched Red-winged Blackbirds for a summer at OSU’s @stonelab before doing an REU with @birdfiddler at @kstatebio, studying Grasshopper Sparrows. I built that into an MSc studying the effects of cowbirds on grassland birds (#PrairieBabies)

Robin nests are generally really easy to find (at least relative to the grassland bird nests I looked for for project #PrairieBabies) but I found a really well-hidden one today while searching for nests for project #GrowBirdGrow!
How do I find a nest wedged in dense pines? 1/3

Dickcissels have arrived at my fieldsites! They remind me of my previous project #PrairieBabies, for which I measured the growth of Dickcissel babies in the prairies of Kansas!

Lark Sparrows are, in my opinion, one of the most striking sparrows in North America. There were quite a few of them in the bison pastures in which I worked for project #PrairieBabies. They line their nests with bison floof!

Bobolinks are associated with relatively wet tallgrass prairies-- I worked in Kansas tallgrass prairies for project #PrairieBabies but I never saw them there. I did see them in Illinois though!

Brown-headed Cowbirds are some of my favorite birds (I've studied them for aspects of projects #PrairieBabies and #GrowBirdGrow). They lay their eggs in other birds' nests and force those birds to raise their young! This male seems smug about it all.

Grasshopper Sparrow females are super secretive and hide their nests very well-- finding them for project #PrairieBabies was a real challenge!
Here's mom on her nest-- I used a high-zoom camera so I didn't disturb her! Don't approach nests!

Bell's Vireos may be a little boring looking but they sure make up for it in sass!

Really excited for @jenniferwalshnh's talk "Lessons from sparrows: the extraordinary adaptive capacity of these little brown birds"
I absolutely adore sparrows (in case you haven't caught that from my #PrairieBabies Grasshopper Sparrow project).

#PrairieBabiesThrowback photos, check out my Flickr! There are literally thousands of prairie photos on there that you are more than welcome to steal: https://t.co/0JbZOAenZO

This is my last #PrairieBabiesThrowback photo! I'll leave you with this striking Lark Sparrow, just one of the half-dozen sparrows that made my time on project #PrairieBabies so wonderful.

This is the time of year the American Goldfinch is nesting. Aren't they gorgeous??

This photo isn't stolen from Todd's talk, it's from my #PrairieBabies work but it is relevant because I stole Todd's methodology to ask related questions for that MS thesis haha

Have any cool hunches contributed to your research?
While banding baby Grasshopper Sparrows I noticed they were all the same age but very different sizes. Studying their growth rates ended up being my MS thesis, project #PrairieBabies!
Dr. Loiselle reminds us that your natural history observations in the field matter.
See something cool? Follow up on that! It could lead to very neat results.

They say you can see for miles and miles on the prairie. On this day, the storm was an hour's drive north of us!

I love your idea @birdsandbri so I'm stealing it!
Hi #NAOC2020, I'm a PhD student @Illinois_Alma studying maternal effects (esp. hormones in eggs) on development (@GrowBirdsGrow). I previously studied #PrairieBabies at @kstatebio! I enjoy #WildlifePhotography & tweeting.
My favorite color is the fresh green color of grass in a newly burnt prairie. We burn the prairie to maintain natural disturbance regimes.

Horned Lizards are a species common in the southwest but also in northeast Kansas! I really adore them and their cute little faces.
