When writing 2 Peter 1:3โ4, the apostle Peter says that Godโs divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness, and then mentions the precious promises that make us partakers of His divine nature. But what do promises have to do with the divine life? One would think he would link back to 1 Peter 1:23โthat the word of God is the seed, the sperma, the genetic code of God that makes us a brand-new breed. A new creation, a superior race, carrying the very substance of God flowing within our veins, our tissues, our mental processes, and our cells.
Yet, he talks about promisesโand to be honest, he is not wrong. For example, the promises of God putting His Spirit within us fall perfectly in line with this journey toward apotheosis (Ezekiel 36:27). Among all the promises we can inherit in the kingdom of God, I have always been amazed by the promise of wisdom given generously to God's people without finding fault (James 1:5โ8).
If there is anything a decision-maker needs in life, it is wisdom. Life is a series of choices, and these should never be based solely on potential financial outcomes. When Lot was given the "go-ahead" by Abraham to choose where he would reside, Lot saw the beauty and affluence of Sodom and chose it (Genesis 13:10; Ezekiel 16:49). And we know how that ended for him: a deserted home, a solidified wife, a depressed heart, incestuous daughters, and no legacy. Wisdom enables you to look beyond what the eyes can see and choose according to the mind of Christ. Ultimately, wisdom is justified by her childrenโby the outcomes it produces.
