Preparedness begins long before the first warning reaches a community. For the people who live, farm and earn their livelihoods within the Tana and Athi River Basins, rainfall upstream can determine what happens downstream. A forecast, therefore, is not just information. It is an opportunity to act—to protect a family, move livestock to safer ground, secure a farm, safeguard infrastructure and, where necessary, get people out of harm’s way. This is why this engagement is important. At @TardaKE, we're working to close the gap between what the science tells us and what communities are able to do with that information. Early warning only has value when it reaches the right people in time and is followed by practical action. The anticipated enhanced rainfall this #OND season calls for vigilance, coordination and preparation across the counties within our two basins. It calls for institutions to look beyond their individual mandates and understand the basin as one connected system—where what happens upstream can have consequences far downstream. And as we do so, our measure of success should ultimately be simple: how well we have helped the communities we serve to anticipate risk, protect what matters to them and withstand what comes. I appreciate @MeteoKenya for the continued partnership. The science must travel beyond meeting rooms and forecasts. It must reach the farmer, the pastoralist, the family living near a river, the county officer and every community that depends on the Tana and Athi systems. Preparedness is measured downstream. #TARDAAt52 #ElNino2026 #ClimateResilience #EarlyWarning #AnticipatoryAction #TanaBasin #AthiBasin #PreparednessIsMeasuredDownstream
