These plants are the result of centuries of crossing and selection involving the wild primrose (Primula vulgaris), cowslip (Primula veris), oxlip (Primula elatior), and later the Caucasian Primula juliae and other species. ▶️ The plants form dense, evergreen to semi-evergreen rosettes of foliage that spread slowly by short rhizomes. Individual leaves are oblong-obovate to broadly lanceolate, 7–25 cm long and 3–8 cm wide, gradually narrowing into a winged petiole roughly equal to the blade length. The leaf texture is strongly bullate (puckered or blistered) between the impressed veins on the upper surface, softly hairy beneath, and mid- to dark green, sometimes with a bronze tint in newer cultivars. From late winter through mid-spring (often beginning as early as January in mild climates and continuing into May), stout, leafless scapes rise 15–35 cm above the foliage, each one topped by a one-sided or perfectly rounded umbel carrying 6–20 (sometimes up to 40) flowers. The individual flowers are salverform: a narrow tube 10–15 mm long suddenly flaring into five broad, notched or emarginate lobes forming a flat face 2.5–4.5 cm in diameter. Most cultivars have a prominent yellow, gold, or white eye at the mouth of the tube, creating a striking contrast against petals of almost every conceivable color, deep velvet purple, crimson, scarlet, rose-pink, apricot, orange, sky-blue, lavender, pure white, cream, and countless bicolors and picotees.
