#PrinceAppreciationThread 𝘈𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘋𝘢𝘺 (1985) Imagine yourself in Prince’s high-heeled boots. 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘙𝘪𝘯 makes you the first American artist to have the #1 song, album, and movie in the same year. Millions of fans are eager to see you and your most iconic band rock the house. But you’re tired of playing the same material. Do you coast on your back catalog or seek a new direction, sound, and vision? Enter 𝘈𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘋𝘢𝘺: a bold album that’s curious yet confident, melodic yet funky, tortured yet blissful. “𝐑𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐭” (#2 U.S. Pop) conceals its Rude Boy charm in paisley drums and silk strings: 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘪𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘢 𝘐𝘧 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 (𝘖𝘰𝘩) 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘊𝘶𝘻, 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺, 𝘐’𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘴 𝘪𝘯 “𝐏𝐨𝐩 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞” (#7 U.S. Pop) asks fascinating questions over shimmering synths and popping bass lines: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦? 𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘺 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯’ 𝘜 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯? 𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘫𝘦𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯’ 𝘜 ‘𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥? 𝘋𝘪𝘥 𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦’𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘹? 𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦 There are also echoes of Black American Music’s past. On “𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭,” Prince sings as majestic as Stevie Wonder that his 5’ 3” frame can barely contain it. The militant funk of “𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚” detonates inside your speakers you can almost feel Sly Stone’s fury when you press play. Even the beloved B-sides (“𝐒𝐡𝐞’𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐫,” “𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨,” “𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥,” “𝟒 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐄𝐲𝐞𝐬”) could’ve been career-defining hits for most artists. Many disagreed with Prince’s decision to release 𝘈𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘋𝘢𝘺. But, in hindsight, it was necessary. What made Prince larger than life was his rebellious nature. He enjoyed taking the rule book, rewriting it, and ripping it to shreds because he could.
